Sumitra Singh (born 3 May 1930) is an Indian politician and senior Jat leader from the Shekhawati region in Rajasthan. She was the first women Speaker of Rajasthan Legislative Assembly. She was elected as member of Rajasthan Legislative Assembly for nine terms,out of which in three terms she represented Pilani constituency while she represented Jhunjhunu constituency for six terms. She is one of the most successful women politician of Rajasthan state. [1] [2] [3] [4]
She was born on 3 May 1930 in village Kisari in Jhunjhunu district into a Jat family. She did master of arts in Hindi literature from Banasthali Vidyapith. [5]
Singh was elected as member of Rajasthan legislative assembly for the first time in 1957 from Pilani constituency. She became member of Rajasthan legislative assembly from Jhunjhunu constituency for consecutive four terms between 1962 to 1980. Then Singh again elected as MLA from Pilani constituency for two consecutive terms between 1985 to 1992. She again become member of Rajasthan legislative assembly from Jhunjhunu constituency between 1998 to 2008. [4]
Jhunjhunu district is a district of the Indian state of Rajasthan in northern India. The city of Jhunjhunu is the district headquarters. Jhunjhunu is an old and historical town having its own district headquarters. It is said that it was ruled over by Chouhan dynasty in the Vikram era 1045. The district is famous for the frescos on its grand Havelis. It is also famous for providing considerable representation to Indian defense forces. Jhunjhunu district was named in the memory of a Jat named “Jhunjha”or “Jujhar Singh Nehra”. The district has a population of 2,139,658,an area of 5926 km²,and a population density of 361 persons per km. The district falls within Shekhawati region,and is bounded on the North-East and East by Haryana state,on the South-East,South &South-West by Sikar District &on the North-West and North by Churu District.
