Background

Following the release of her fourth studio album Highly Flavoured (2017), [3] Busiswa gave birth to her first child, Lukhanyo Gqulu on 8 January 2018. [4] She took a hiatus from music in 2018 to focus on her new baby.

Gqulu announced on her social media that the album would be released on 9 November 2018, sharing the artwork of the album. [5]

Composition

Summer Life is a Gqom album that incorporates elements of House Music and Kwaito. [6] [7]

Critical reception

Sabelo Mkhabela of OkayAfrica wrote that "Busiswa is back with her second album, a year after her debut Highly Flavoured. Fittingly titled Summer Life, the new album spans 10 tracks, and, as you'd expect, will make it impossible for you to listen without shaking parts of your body. Sonically, Summer Life leans towards gqom......" [8]

Promotion

Gqulu made several television appearances and live performances in support of the album. On 9 November 2018, on the release Busiswa performed live on Live Amp. [6] Busiswa also made appearance on uMhlobo Wenene FM radio to promote the album.

Boyz II Men American boy band group

Boyz II Men also known as (B2M) is an American boy band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, best known for emotional ballads and a cappella harmonies. Flavour (musician) Nigerian singer

Chinedu Okoli, better known by his stage name Flavour N'abania or simply Flavour, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He began his musical career as a drummer for a local church. Flavour is popularly known across Africa and the world for his hit song "Nwa Baby ". He is currently signed to 2nite Entertainment.

Amethyst Amelia Kelly, known by her stage name Iggy Azalea, is an Australian rapper, singer, songwriter, and model. At the age of 16, Azalea moved to the United States from Sydney, Australia, to pursue a career in music. Azalea earned public recognition after releasing the music videos for her songs "Pussy" and "Two Times" on YouTube, both of which gained rapid popularity. Azalea signed a recording contract with American rapper T.I.'s label Grand Hustle shortly afterward and released her debut mixtape, Ignorant Art (2011).

Oscar Sibonginkosi Mdlongwa is a South African recording artist, DJ, record producer and businessman. Having been in the music industry for over 30 years, Oskido has reached a prominent status in the South African music industry, more-so in popular youth culture. He is undoubtedly one of the pioneering artists that popularised the Kwaito genre of music outside of the townships of South Africa, and he's been central to the rise of Afro-house and newer genres like amapiano. Oskido is the co-founder of Kalawa Jazmee Records, a record label that is home to musical acts like Mafikizolo, Bongo Maffin, and many other foremost groups.

Nigerian recording artist Runtown has released one studio album, seventeen singles and ten music videos. His debut single was released in 2007 as an upcoming artist. He shot to limelight in 2014 upon the release of "Gallardo", a song which features vocals from Davido and was released as the first single off his debut studio album Ghetto University. Gallardo went on to win "Best Collaboration of the Year" at the 2014 edition of the Nigeria Entertainment Awards. On 23 November 2015, Runtown released his debut studio album titled Ghetto University via MTN Music Plus through Eric Many Entertainment. Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, popularly known by his stage name DJ Maphorisa, is a South African record producer, DJ and vocalist. As a record producer with a blend of house music and afropop, he has worked with and has received production credits from several notable artists, including Wizkid, Kwesta, Uhuru, Drake, Black Coffee, Major Lazer, Runtown, C4 Pedro, Kabza De Small and Era Istrefi, among others. DJ Maphorisa is presently signed to his record label BlaqBoy Music upon quitting Kalawa Jazmee Records. He recently created a new record label called *New Money Gang*

Gqom[ᶢǃʱòm] '(Igqomu)[iᶢǃʱòmu] is a genre of electronic dance music that emerged in the early 2010s from Durban, South Africa, pioneered largely by producer DJ Lag, duo Rudeboyz, Griffit Vigo, Dominowe and Citizen Boy developed from South African house music, kwaito and techno. Unlike other South African electronic music, gqom is typified by minimal, raw and repetitive sound with heavy bass beats but without the four-on-the-floor rhythm pattern.

Sho Madjozi South African musician

Maya Christinah Xichavo Wegerif, known professionally as Sho Madjozi, is a South African rapper, singer, songwriter, actress and poet. Regarded as one of the best performers in Africa, Madjozi incorporates the Tsonga culture through her music and public image.In 2019, Madjozi was named as one of Forbes Africa's 30 Under 30 for her contribution in the music and entertainment sector.

Distruction Boyz is a Gqom music duo from Durban, South Africa which consists of recording artists and record producers Thobani “Que” Mgobhozi and Zipho “Goldmax” Mthembu. Their Debut album Gqom Is the Future was certified gold by RISA making it the first Gqom album to ever achieve this status.

Bongekile Simelane, better known as Babes Wodumo is a South African gqom artist and choreographer. She rose to fame following the release of her breakthrough song "Wololo", in 2016. The song later appeared on her debut studio album, Gqom Queen, released in late 2016. She appeared on Black Panther: The Album on a song called "Redemption". In 2017, Wodumo was nominated for the BET Award for Best International Act: Africa. In July 2020, she released her second album Idando Kazi.

Busiswa Gqulu, known mononymously as Busiswa or Busi, is a South African singer-songwriter and poet. Born in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, South Africa, she gained public recognition for her feature on DJ Zinhle's song, "My Name Is", after being discovered by Kalawa Jazmee's CEO Oskido.

The 24th Annual South African Music Awards was held at Sun City, in the North West on June 2, 2018. The list of nominees was announced on April 19, 2018 at Birchwood Hotel in Ekurhuleni. Mafikizolo, Mi Casa and Shekhinah each received a node of nomination Other artists with multiple nominations include Mobi Dixon, Distruction Boyz and Riky Rick. It aired live on SABC 1 at 20:00 CAT. The show was hosted by Somizi Mhlongo, Dineo Ranaka and Mpho Popps.

Highly Flavoured is the debut studio album by South African singer, poet and songwriter Busiswa. It was released on 8 December 2017 through Kalawa Jazmee. The album features guest appearances by artists DJ Maphorisa, Busi N, DJ Athie, Da Fre, DJ Toxic, Nokwazi, Moozlie, Lando and Yasirah. Primarily, Highly Flavoured is a gqom album.

Moonchild Sanelly South African musician and dancer

Sanelisiwe Twisha, known professionally as Moonchild Sanelly is a South African musician and dancer. She is known for her signature blue-colored hair and her self-created music genre called "Future ghetto punk". Originally from Port Elizabeth, the singer first came into limelight in the Durban poetry and music scene before relocating to Johannesburg, where she has continued her musical career. Her music has reached audiences beyond South Africa's borders, playing in festivals such as SXSW in Austin, Texas and Primavera Sound in Barcelona. In August 2018, she went on a European tour with South African hip hop group Die Antwoord. Her music fuses elements of experimental electronic, afro-punk and edgy-pop with hints of her strong kwaito, hip hop and jazz background.

DJ Lag

Lwazi Asanda Gwala, better known as DJ Lag is a South African DJ and record producer. He is regarded as the pioneer of Gqom, a genre of electronic dance music that emerged in the early 2010s in Durban, South Africa. In 2019, DJ Lag notably collaborated with Tierra Whack, Beyoncé, Moonchild Sanelly, Nija, Yemi Alade, and Busiswa on a track called "My Power" on Beyoncé's album, The Lion King: The Gift.

Khaka Yena, known commonly by his stage name Gaba Cannal, is a South African music producer and DJ. His music production is known for his soulful house take on Amapiano. His name "Gaba Cannal" when roughly translated into Portuguese, means "Let It Be".

Kamogelo Mphela is a South African dancer and singer. She became an internet celebrity after she posted a video of her dancing on her social media account.
