Sunbird Hotels and Resorts or simply Sunbird Hotels, is a Malawian chain of hotels located across the country's cities and towns. [1] [2] [3] [4] It is the country's biggest chain of hotels. [5] The company was incorporated around 1988 as a private institution. [6]


The hotel offers facilities and services for the local and middle class business, as well as leisure travelers. [7] In 2021, the company made it compulsory for its workers to get vaccinated against COVID-19. [8] [9] [10]

In December of 2019, the Malawian government owns the largest shareholder of 71% and Press Corporation owns about 15%, and the members of the public share 14%. The Chief Executive of the company is Yusuf Olela. [6] [11] [12]

Eric Mabedi was a Malawian comedian and actor better known by his stage name as Jakobo. He gained national recognition after associating with Kwathu Drama Group in which he was in the part of the duo ‘Izeki ndi Jacobo’. He died on Monday, 2 August 2021, at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital in Blantyre due to COVID-19. He partnered with John Nyanga in Izeki ndi Jakobo plays. He came from Thumbwe village in Chiradzulu district. He was also associated with Bon Kalindo who is popularly known as Winiko.

Skeffa Chimoto is a Malawian musician and a member of the "Real Sounds" band. His debut sophomore album "Nabola Moyo " was well received and critically acclaimed, topping music charts all over Malawi. His other album ‘Ndife Amodzi’ has one of the best tracks, the kind that the music industry has been craving for in ‘Ndakusowa’, ‘Sungamchose’, title track ‘Ndife Amodzi’ and ‘Ulendo’. He has collaborated with various artists such as Dalisoul from Zambia, Billy Kaunda, Allelluya Band and Katelele Ching'oma.

Kelvin Khuzumba popularly known as Nesnes is a Malawian rnb artist and song writer. He became popular after releasing songs such as Chidodo and It’s not fair in early 2010s. He featured Conel Chyoon and Lap T in the album which has songs like Chibwelele, Kadya Ubwelele, Sionse, Ndinjoye and Mundilanditse.

The Great Angels Choir is a CCAP gospel musical group from Lilongwe, Malawi. In 2016, the choir shared a stage with American singer, Don Moen. In 2023, it was rumoured that the choir was spliting to which it publicly denied. In September 2023, the choir collaborated with South Africa's Rebecca Malope in performance at the Blessings Gospel Concert at BICC in Lilongwe and other artists. In 2017, the choir hired Sipho Makhabane to spice their website.

The National Economic Empowerment Fund Limited (NEEF), formerly Malawi Enterprise Development Fund (MEDF) is a Malawian government owned Microfinance Institution with intention to economically empower people in rural and urban areas,, by providing quality, affordable and sustainable microfinance services for better health. In May 2021, NEEF gave K5.56 billion in cash to various women and youths groups. The institution is located in Lilongwe, Malawi.

Joy Nathu is a Malawian radio DJ, producer, broadcaster and presenter. Nathu is known to have started a radio show called 'Made on Monday'. He won Radio DJ/Personality of the Year in 2019. Nathu has worked with various other radio presenters such as Anne Kadammanja and Juliet Royo.

Kwathu Drama Group is a Malawian oldest drama group mainly composed of Eric Mabedi and John Nyanga, who died in 2021, that started in 1980. Chiyanjano Muheziwa popularly known as Annie Matumbi, and sometimes Nyakwawa, is a Malawian veteran musician, tv presenter, actor and politician. In 2017, Matumbi claimed he was the father of Malawi urban music. In 2018, Matumbi stood in a winning a parliamentary seat in 2019's general election under Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Candidate for Lilongwe City South West constituency.

Priscilla Kayira is a Malawian radio broadcaster, presenter and television personality. In 2019, Kayira was nominated the Personality of the Year along with Luna and Sharon Chirwa in UMP Media Awards. She won the same award in the same category in 2020 and 2022.She was born in Mzuzu and moved to Southern Region to purse her career. She is a Tumbuka by tribe. Her role model was the former MBC-TV personality, Tamara Chafunya.

Alleluya Band is an oldest Malawian music group founded by Paul Banda his brother Lucius Banda from Balaka. The band started and rose to fame in 1970s. The band's current leader is Coss Chiwalo. In 2021, the group released their 13th album in May. In 2018 and 2019, the band visited Rome and met with Pope Francis for Panama for World Youth Day. In 2020, after the band embarked from Italy, they were quarantined due to Covid-19. The band has also shared stage with different artists such as Skeffa Chimoto and Dan Lufani.

National Association for People living with HIV/AIDS in Malawi(NAPHAM) is a Malawian non-governmental member-based organization founded in 1993 aiming at providing a forum for people living with HIV/AIDS in Malawi to share their experiences and find solutions to solve them. The organization was found with an intention to minimised discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS as at the time people were stigmatized and treated as outcasts when diagnosed with HIV/AIDS.

Malawi Network of AIDS Services(MANASO) is a membership- based organization in Malawi that aims at facilitating other community organisations to work in harmony in advancing the fight against HIV/AIDS in Malawi. It is a local non-governmental organization primarily dedicated to contributing to the reduction of HIV and minimizing of suffering caused by the HIV epidemic in Malawi. The organisation archives its roles through coordination and capacity building, as well as mobilization. Abraham John Simama is a Malawian preacher and businessman. He is the chairman of the Simama group of companies. He is also the owner of Simama Hotel, an international standard hotel located in the capital city of Malawi, Lilongwe. Simama is the chairman of the Northern Region Football Association (NRFA) and owns the Simama Premier League, as well as Simama General Dealers.
