Sunfest was an annual rock festival based in Gimli, Manitoba, Canada, at Gimli Motorsports Park. The festival was held over a three or four-day period every August from 1990 to 1996 and featured predominantly Canadian rock bands.
The first Sunfest rock festival was held from August 17 to August 19 of 1990. The lineup for the festival included Bachman–Turner Overdrive, Doug and the Slugs, The Northern Pikes, The Tragically Hip, Queen City Kids, Kenny Shields and The Watchmen. [1] About 21,000 people attended the festival. [2]
A second Sunfest was held the next year from August 16 to August 18. The festival's lineup for that year included Crash Test Dummies, The Tragically Hip and Blue Rodeo. [3] 42,000 people attended that year's festival. [4]
The 1992 edition of Sunfest was held from August 14 to August 16. The festival's lineup for that year included The Watchmen, Tom Cochrane, 54-40, Colin James, Sue Medley, April Wine and Kim Mitchell. [4] The festival again succeeded in having more attendees than the previous year's.
The 1993 edition of Sunfest was held from August 13 to August 15. It was the first year the festival featured a band from outside of Canada. That year's festival was headlined by Pearl Jam, and also featured Blue Rodeo, Wild T and the Spirit, 54-40, The Watchmen, The Pursuit of Happiness, Skydiggers, Sass Jordan, Streetheart, Randy Bachman, Sven Gali and Headstones. Day 2 set a record one-day attendance for the festival with 19,000 people attending the night in which Pearl Jam performed. [2]
The 1994 edition of Sunfest was held from August 11 to August 14. The festival's lineup for that year included The Waltons, Headstones, The Tea Party, Sass Jordan, Our Lady Peace, 13 Engines, The Odds, Moist, The Watchmen, 54-40, David Gogo, Trooper, April Wine, Joan Jett and Kim Mitchell. [2]
The 1995 edition of Sunfest was held from August 17 to August 20. The festival's lineup for that year included Punchbuggy, The Age of Electric, The Tea Party, The Pursuit of Happiness, The Odds, Barenaked Ladies, Rhymes with Orange, 13 Engines, Headstones, Moist, Big Sugar, Barney Bentall, Colin James and Tom Cochrane. The final edition of Sunfest was held from August 16 to 18 of 1996. The festival's lineup for that year included Vince Neil, 54-40, Sloan, Blue Meanies, Headstones, The Killjoys, Pluto and Limblifter. [6]
Randolph Charles Bachman is a Canadian guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He was a founding member of the bands The Guess Who and Bachman–Turner Overdrive. Bachman recorded as a solo artist and was part of a number of short-lived bands such as Brave Belt, Union and Ironhorse. He was a national radio personality on CBC Radio, hosting the weekly music show, Vinyl Tap. Bachman was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in 2016.
The Guess Who is a Canadian rock band from Winnipeg, Manitoba, best known for its blues rock and psychedelic rock hits from 1968 to 1975.
Molson Canadian Rocks for Toronto was a benefit rock concert that was held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on July 30, 2003. It was also known as "Toronto Rocks", "Stars 4 SARS", "SARSStock", "SARSfest", "SARS-a-palooza", the "SARS concert", or, more descriptively, "The Rolling Stones SARS Benefit Concert". Bachman–Turner Overdrive, often abbreviated as BTO, were a Canadian rock band from Winnipeg, Manitoba, founded by Randy Bachman, Robbie Bachman and Fred Turner. Their 1970s catalogue included five Top 40 albums and six US Top 40 singles. BTO has five certified Gold albums and one certified Platinum album in the US; in Canada, they have six certified Platinum albums and one certified Gold album. The band has sold nearly 30 million albums worldwide, and has fans affectionately known as "gearheads". Many of their songs, including "Let It Ride", "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet", "Takin' Care of Business", "Hey You", and "Roll on Down the Highway", still receive regular play on classic-rock stations.
Thomas William Cochrane is a Canadian musician best known as the frontman for the rock band Red Rider and for his work as a solo singer-songwriter. Cochrane has won eight Juno Awards. He is a member of the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, an officer of the Order of Canada, and has an honorary doctorate from Brandon University. In September 2009, he was inducted onto the Canadian Walk of Fame.

Gimli is an unincorporated community in the Rural Municipality of Gimli on the west side of Lake Winnipeg in Manitoba, Canada. The community's first European settlers were Icelanders who were part of the New Iceland settlement in Manitoba. The community maintains a strong connection to Iceland and Icelandic culture today, including the annual Icelandic Festival. It was incorporated as a village on March 6, 1908, and held town status between December 31, 1946, and January 1, 2003, when it amalgamated with the RM of Gimli. Census Canada now recognizes the community as a population centre for census purposes. The 2016 Canadian census recorded a population of 2,246 in the population centre of Gimli.

Interstellar Rodeo was an annual three-day outdoor music event held the last weekend of July in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, established in 2012 and held at the Heritage Amphitheatre within Hawrelak Park. From 2015 to 2017, Six Shooter Records also had an Interstellar Rodeo in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The final Edmonton Interstellar Rodeo was in 2019.
Gimli Motorsports Park is a multi-track motorsports facility located in Gimli, Manitoba, Canada. The 95-hectare facility features a 1/4-mile dragstrip, a 1.3-mile road racing course, a one-kilometre karting track and a two-kilometre motocross track. The park hosts events for motorsports groups including the Winnipeg Sports Car Club, Drag Racing Association of Manitoba, Manitoba Roadracing Association (Superbikes), and the Manitoba Karting Association.
