Produced by Bruce Johnston, the album peaked at number 75 in the US, during a chart stay of 6 weeks, and number 54 in the UK. It is the group's last album recorded with Dennis Wilson, who drowned in 1983, although he only appears on one song.

The album was recognised as "a farewell to the old Bee Gees" as the album marked the end of an era for the group in several ways: it was their last album to be recorded solely at IBC Studios, in London, their last with conductor and arranger Bill Shepherd, who had guided them since 1967, and their last under their first contract with Robert Stigwood. Some of the songs were old ones finished or rewritten for the occasion.

Samuel Benjamin Cohen is an American rock vocalist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, artist, and producer based in Brooklyn, New York. A founding member of the psychedelic rock and pop band Apollo Sunshine, he released several albums with the group in the early 2000s. In 2009 he formed the solo project Yellowbirds, releasing the debut album The Color in 2011. This release was followed by Songs from the Vanished Frontier in 2013. The first Sam Cohen record, Cool It, was released on April 28, 2015 on Easy Sound Records, and primary featured Cohen playing all of the instruments. It was then re-released on Danger Mouse's imprint of Columbia Records, 30th Century Records, on June 3, 2016. Cohen is also known for his original collages on the Yellowbirds album covers, and his collage animation videos.

The album marks a shift in sound for the band, going for more of an indie rock approach when compared to the slick pop-punk sound of its predecessor, So You've Ruined Your Life. All of the album's tracks were written during a time in which the band's main songwriter, Michael Torres, was addicted to drugs. Lyrical themes include misanthropy, drugs, alcohol, terrorism, the end of the world, murder, and relationship problems. It is the first album to feature long-time band members Eric Summer and Dave Palamero.
Selling Out & Going Home is the third studio album by American indie rock band Get Set Go, released on January 23, 2007 on TSR Records. The album, released only a year after its predecessor Ordinary World, was recorded, mixed, and mastered at Stanley Recordings in June 2006. It's also the first album by the group to feature guitarist Jim Daley, who joined the group soon after production for Ordinary World ended.
