Suraiya Begum is a retired Bangladeshi Civil Servant and former Commissioner of the Information Commission. She was the Secretary of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. [1]

Early life

Begum did her bachelor's degree and masters in Economics from the University of Dhaka. [2] She has a masters in health management from University of Leeds. [2] She was the first women to do a NDC course from the National Defence College. [2]

Career

In 1982, Begum joined the Bangladesh Civil Service. [2]

Begum was the Joint Secretary of Ministry of Cultural Affairs in 2007. [3] In July 2008, Begum was the Deputy Registrar of Bangladesh Nursing Council. [4]

Begum served as the secretary of the Statistics and Informatics Division and the Implementation Monitoring and Evaluation Division. [2] She was the first secretary at the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission, Kolkata. [2] She is the chairperson of the Bangladesh Civil Service Women Network. [2]

In April 2011, Begum led the Bangladeshi delegation to the 150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore. [5] In February 2012, Bangladesh High Court summoned Begum, when she was serving as the Secretary of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, and asked her to explain why contempt of court proceedings should not taken against her for failing to obey a directive of the High Court to protect Central Shaheed Minar. [6] She was the Secretary of the Ministry of Social Welfare in 2013. [7]

From February 2015 to January 2018, Begum was the senior secretary at the Prime Ministers Office under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. [2] In March 2015, she attended a program Access to Information to celebrate women's day as chief guest. [8] She was part of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's trip to France in December 2017. [9] On 26 January, Sajjadul Hassan replaced her as the senior secretary at the Prime Ministers Office. [10] On 29 May 2018, she was appointed a commissioner of the Information Commission. [2] She was appointed director of Grameen Bank by the government of Bangladesh. [11] She briefly served as the Chief Information Officer in 2023. [12]

Begum ended her term as Information Commissioner on 28 May 2023. [13]

The Norwegian Nobel Committee said that "lasting peace cannot be achieved unless large population groups find ways in which to break out of poverty" and that "across cultures and civilizations, Yunus and Grameen Bank have shown that even the poorest of the poor can work to bring about their own development". Yunus has received several other national and international honours. He received the United States Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009 and the Congressional Gold Medal in 2010.

General elections were held in Bangladesh on 29 December 2008. The two main parties in the election were the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Khaleda Zia, and the Bangladesh Awami League Party, led by Sheikh Hasina. The Bangladesh Awami League Party formed a fourteen-party Grand Alliance including Ershad's Jatiya Party, while the BNP formed a four-party alliance which included the Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami. The election was originally scheduled for January 2007, but it was postponed by a military-controlled caretaker government for an extended period of time.

The Fourth Hasina ministry is the current cabinet of Bangladesh headed by Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina which was formed after the 2018 general election which was held on 30 December 2018.
