Surendra Poonamchand Shah is an engineer and emeritus professor, currently at The University of Texas at Arlington, USA. Shah started his academic career and has worked in fracture, fiber reinforced composites, non-destructive evaluation, transport properties, processing, rheology, nanotechnology, and use of solid waste materials. [1] His contributions to the fields of civil engineering and materials science have been recognized worldwide through membership and leadership in various scientific societies and universities.
Shah received his bachelor's degree in civil engineering from BVM Engineering College, India in 1959. He received his MSc and PhD degrees from Lehigh University in 1960 and Cornell University in 1965, respectively. [2]
In 1966, Shah joined the faculty of the University of Illinois, where he held the role of assistant professor (1966–1969), associate professor (1969–1973), and the director of the graduate program in the Department of Materials Engineering (1973–1981). In 1981, Shah joined the faculty of Northwestern University and held various positions there. From 1981 to 2012, he was a Professor of Civil Engineering and a Walter P. Murphy Professor of Civil Engineering within the Robert R. McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science. Also, from 1990 to 2012, he was the director of the National Science Foundation (NSF) funded Center for Advanced Cement-Based Materials. [3] He has served as a Presidential Distinguished Professor of the Department of Civil Engineering and Materials Science Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington since 2019. [4] He has also held the title of Walter P. Murphy Professor Emeritus at Northwestern University since 2012. [5]
Shah has served as a consultant for the United Nations, various government bodies, and industries across the United States, France, Switzerland, China, Denmark and the Netherlands. He has been a visiting professor at universities including Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Delft University of Technology, Technical University of Denmark, LCPC in France, The University of Syndey, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He served as a visiting scientist at NATO in 1992. In addition to this, Shah has held the post of Distinguished Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras since 2014. [6]
He has held positions as an honorary professor at several universities including the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Tongji University among others. [7] He is a member of Institute of Advanced Studies at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Shah has over 500 articles in scholarly journals. [8] As an editor, he has overseen the publication of 20 books and served as editor-in-chief for the journal Materials and Structures from 2001 to 2005 and the co-author-in-chief for the journal Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering since 2017. Shah was appointed as the chairman of the technical committees of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and the International Union of Laboratories and Experts in Construction Materials, Systems and Structures (RILEM). [11] Within the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), he has served as the chairman of the technical committee, an executive committee member, and a member of the advisory board of the Engineering Mechanics Division. [12] He is part of the committee conducting research on concrete materials for the Transportation Research Board. [13]
Ralph Brazelton Peck was a civil engineer specializing in soil mechanics, the author and co-author of popular soil mechanics and foundation engineering text books, and Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. In 1948, together with Karl von Terzaghi, Peck published the book Soil Mechanics in Engineering Practice, an influential geotechnical engineering text which continues to be regularly cited and is now in a third edition.

Subra Suresh is an Indian-born American engineer, materials scientist, and academic leader. He is currently Professor at Large at Brown University and Vannevar Bush Professor of Engineering Emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He was Dean of the School of Engineering at MIT from 2007 to 2010 before being appointed as Director of the National Science Foundation (NSF) by Barack Obama, where he served from 2010 to 2013. He was the president of Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) from 2013 to 2017. Between 2018 and 2022, he was the fourth President of Singapore's Nanyang Technological University (NTU), where he was also the inaugural Distinguished University Professor.
Ching Wan Tang is a Hong Kong–American physical chemist. He was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2018 for inventing OLED, and was awarded the 2011 Wolf Prize in Chemistry. Tang is the IAS Bank of East Asia Professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and previously served as the Doris Johns Cherry Professor at the University of Rochester.
Dan Mircea Frangopol is an American civil engineer and the inaugural holder of the Fazlur R. Khan Endowed Chair of Structural Engineering and Architecture at Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
Ken P. Chong is a Research Professor at The George Washington University and a former associate at the National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST). He was the Engineering Advisor, Interim Division Director and program director of Mechanics and Materials at various times for 21 years at the U.S. National Science Foundation. He has published over 200 refereed papers, and is the author or coauthor of twelve books including "Elasticity in Engineering Mechanics", "Intelligent Structures", "Modeling and Simulation-Based Life Cycle Engineering", "Mechanics of Oil Shale", and "Materials for the New Millennium". Franz-Josef Ulm is a structural engineer, an engineering scientist and a professor since 1999. He is Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the Faculty Director of the Concrete Sustainability Hub (CSHub@MIT). He is credited for discovering the nanogranular structure of calcium silicate hydrates (C-S-H), the binding phase of concrete, and for the development of concepts of nanoengineering of concrete which combine advanced nanomechanics experiments with molecular simulation results. He advocates for environmentally sustainable engineering, with "greener" concrete with lower CO2 footprint, to reduce the carbon footprint of concrete; to enhance concrete's resilience; and reduce its impact on global warming.
Alexandria Boehm is an American scientist whose field of study is civil and environmental engineering. She studies sources, fate and transport of pathogens outside the human body, and coastal water quality. Boehm is a senior fellow at Stanford University's Woods Institute for the Environment, faculty fellow at Stanford University's Center for Innovation in Global Health, and an associate professor in Stanford University's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
James L. Skinner is an American theoretical chemist. He is the Joseph O. and Elizabeth S. Hirschfelder Professor Emeritus at the University Wisconsin-Madison. Until 2024 he was a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Welch Foundation. Until 2020, Skinner was the Crown Family Professor of Molecular Engineering, professor of chemistry, director of the Water Research Initiative and deputy dean for faculty affairs of the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago. Skinner is recognized for his contributions to the fields of theoretical chemistry, nonequilibrium statistical mechanics, linear and nonlinear spectroscopy of liquids, amorphous and crystalline solids, surfaces, proteins, and supercritical fluids. Skinner is the co-author of over 230 peer-reviewed research articles.
Reginald DesRoches is an American civil engineer who has served as the president of Rice University since July 1, 2022. From 2020 until 2022, he served as provost of Rice. Earlier, beginning in 2017, he was the dean of engineering at Rice's school of engineering, and from 2012 to 2017, DesRoches held the Karen and John Huff Chair at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Somnath Ghosh is the Michael G. Callas Chair Professor in the Department of Civil & Systems Engineering and a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science & Engineering at Johns Hopkins University (JHU).
