Surjit Kaur Barnala is a Sikh politician from Punjab, India. She is the president of Shiromani Akali Dal (Longowal), a party which aims to support the thinking of Harcharan Singh Longowal and to get the Rajiv-Longowal Accord fully implemented. [1] She was the wife of Surjit Singh Barnala.
Surjit Singh and Surjit Kaur had a daughter Amrit Kaur Sandhu, who was married to an Army officer Major Adesh Pal Singh Sandhu, but Amrit Kaur died in October 2012 due to cancer. Their eldest son Jasjit singh Barnala is a businessman, who runs Barnas International Pvt Ltd. The second son, Ganganjit Singh Barnala is also a politician like his father. Their youngest son Neilinder Singh Barnala died in a car accident in 1996. They have seven grandchildren. Her husband died on 14 January 2017 after prolonged illness.
Panth Rattan Shiri Gurcharan Singh Tohra was a president of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), a Sikh body in charge of controlling Gurdwara. Shiromani Akali Dal (Longowal) was a splinter group of the Parkash Singh Badal-led Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). The party was launched in 2004 with Surjit Kaur Barnala (wife of SAD leader Surjit Singh Barnala) as its president. Prem Singh Chandumajra also joined it after being denied a ticked by the Badal-led SAD, but later left to join SAD (Badal) again in 2007.
Rajkumari Dame Bibiji Amrit Kaur DStJ was an Indian activist and politician. Following her long-lasting association with the Indian independence movement, she was appointed the first Health Minister of India in 1947 and remained in office until 1957. Preneet Kaur is an Indian politician who served in the Government of India as a Minister of State in the Ministry of External Affairs from 2009 to 2014. She is married to Amarinder Singh, who was the 15th Chief Minister of Punjab. She joined the Congress party, to which her husband also belonged once, and contested parliamentary elections repeatedly from the Patiala constituency. In February 2023, she was suspended from party for supporting BJP leader and her husband Amarinder Singh. She won the elections of 1999, 2004 and 2009, but lost her seat in the elections of 2014 and made a comeback by winning again in 2019.
Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa is a member of the Rajya Sabha. He is the President of Shiromani Akali Dal (Sanyukt), which is formed by the merger of Shiromani Akali Dal (Democratic) and Shiromani Akali Dal (Taksali) led by he and Ranjit Singh Brahampura respectively. He used to be a member of the Shiromani Akali Dal political party until tensions rose inside in that party. He was previously a member of 14th Lok Sabha of India, representing the Sangrur constituency of Punjab. He has been awarded the Padma Bhushan in the awards list of 26 January 2019. However, he returned it in December 2020 during the farmer protests.
Sant Harchand Singh Longowal was the President of the Akali Dal during the Punjab insurgency of the 1980s. He had signed the Punjab accord, also known as the Rajiv-Longowal Accord along with Rajiv Gandhi on 24 July 1985. The government accepted most of the demands of Akali Dal who in turn agreed to withdraw their agitation. Less than a month after signing the Punjab accord, Sant Longowal was assassinated by Gyan Singh Leel and Jarnail Singh Halvara.

He was born in a Sandhu Jat Sikh family in present day Pakistan. Heera Singh Sandhu was killed in battle near Pakpattan when he partook in a battle against a Chisti army of devotees of Baba Farid's shrine in 1776.
