Survival of the Witless is a card game produced by Avalanche Press about tenure. Released in 1997, the game was created due to Avalanche Press founder Mike Bennighof's anger at being fired from his teaching job at University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) for winning a teaching award as an untenured professor.^[1]^[2]

A card game is any game using playing cards as the primary device with which the game is played, be they traditional or game-specific. Countless card games exist, including families of related games. A small number of card games played with traditional decks have formally standardized rules, but most are folk games whose rules vary by region, culture, and person. Games using playing cards exploit the fact that cards are individually identifiable from one side only, so that each player knows only the cards he holds and not those held by anyone else. For this reason card games are often characterized as games of chance or “imperfect information”—as distinct from games of strategy or “perfect information,” where the current position is fully visible to all players throughout the game.

Avalanche Press is an American company that publishes board wargames and has published some role-playing game supplements. They have produced The Great War at Sea and Panzer Grenadier series, as well as Red Parachutes, one of their earliest games and a detailed study of the Soviet crossing of the Dnepr River in 1943.

Survival of the Witless was Avalanche Press' hottest selling game,^[1] but as of 2007 is out of print.

Joseph Steven "Joe" Sakic is a Canadian professional ice hockey executive and former player. He played his entire 21-year National Hockey League (NHL) career with the Quebec Nordiques/Colorado Avalanche franchise. Named captain of the team in 1992, Sakic is regarded as one of the most capable team leaders in league history and was able to consistently motivate his team to play at a winning level. Sakic led the Avalanche to Stanley Cup titles in 1996 and 2001, being named the most valuable player of the 1996 playoffs, and honored as the MVP of the NHL in 2001 by the hockey writers and his fellow players. He is one of six players to participate in both of the team's Stanley Cup victories. Sakic was also named to play in 13 NHL All-Star Games and selected to the NHL First All-Star Team at centre three times.

Milan Hejduk is a retired Czech American professional ice hockey forward. Nicknamed "The Duke", he spent all 14 years of his National Hockey League (NHL) career with the Colorado Avalanche and retired holding the record for most career games as an Avalanche player (1,020). In 2003, he won the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy as the NHL's leading goal scorer.

Kārlis Skrastiņš was a Latvian professional ice hockey player. Skrastiņš was drafted by the Nashville Predators of the National Hockey League in 1998 as a defenceman and spent twelve years in the league playing for the Predators, the Colorado Avalanche, the Florida Panthers, and the Dallas Stars.
