Susana Richa de Torrijos (born 22 October 1924) is a Panamanian educator,essayist,and politician.
Richa studied at the Normal School of Santiago ,where she obtained the title of teacher. [1] She later qualified as a graduate in philosophy,a professor of Spanish at the University of Panama,and a PhD in philology at the Complutense University of Madrid.
Richa was a Spanish teacher at several institutions including the Normal School of Santiago,the Liceo de Señoritas,the Universidad Católica Santa María La Antigua,and the University of Panama. She has served as director of the Spanish Department,dean of the Faculty of Philosophy,Arts,and Education,member of the Editorial Board,member of the Board of Directors,academic vice-rector,and rector in charge of the University of Panama.
In the field of public education,Richa was National Supervisor of Spanish,Deputy Director and National Director of Secondary Education,National Director of Education,Vice Minister of Education,and Minister of Education of Panama from 1981 to 1984. [1] [2]
As an essayist,she published two works:Compendio de literatura hispanoamericana y panameña and La educación panameña,situación,problemas y soluciones.
As a politician,during the government of Ernesto Pérez Balladares she was appointed governor of PanamáProvince from 1994 to 1998, [2] [3] when she resigned to be elected legislator of the National Assembly for the Democratic Revolutionary Party in 1999,and re-elected in 2004. She was vice president of the National Assembly on two occasions:2001–2002 and 2006–2007. [2]
In December 1999 Richa was separated from her position of professor at the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Panama under the Faúndes Law,which prohibited public officials from serving beyond age 75. She sought a reversal before the Third Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice,but was unsuccessful. [4] On 20 August 2007,she co-sponsored an initiative which successfully repealed the Faúndes Law. [5] In 2011 she received an award for 50 years of service with the University. [6]
Richa is married to Hugo Torrijos (brother of General Omar Torrijos Herrera) and had one son,politician Hugo Torrijos Richa,who died in 2010. [7] She is also the aunt of former President Martín Torrijos. [8]

Isabel de Saint Malo García de Alvarado is a Panamanian politician and diplomat. She formerly was the Vice President of Panama and Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1 July 2014,to 30 June 2019. De Saint Malo ran with elected President Juan Carlos Varela,on the ticket made up of an alliance of the Panameñista Party and the People's Party. She is the first woman in Panama's history elected for this post and the first woman to be appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in Panama.

Panama sent a delegation to compete at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro,Brazil,from 7–18 September 2016. This was the nation's seventh time competing in the Summer Paralympic Games after it first entered the movement at the 1992 Summer Paralympics. The Panamanian delegation to Rio de Janeiro consisted of two athletes:shot put thrower Francisco Cedeño Almengor and javelin thrower Iveth Valdes Romero. Almengor ranked eleventh out of twelve athletes in the men's shot put F54–55 competition and Romero placed in the same position in the women's javelin F55–F56 event.
Marta Matamoros (1909–2005) was one of the labor leaders of Panama. In Panamanian history,she is known as a shoemaker,seamstress,trade unionist,communist and nationalist leader and is "synonymous with organized labor" in the Panamanian psyche. She is known for leading strikes in the 1940s which resulted in workers gaining maternity leave with pay and job security while they were on leave. In 1951,she became the first woman general secretary of the Trade Union Federation of Workers of Panama. "The Hunger and Desperation March" Matamoros led in 1959,resulted in the first minimum wage law in Panama. After she joined the Communist movement of Panama,she became the subject of investigations,though it did not stop her from protesting U.S. involvement in Panamanian affairs. In 1994,she was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Omar Torrijos Herrera and in 2006,a meritorious order was named in her honor,the Order of Marta Matamoros to recognize those who have promoted gender equality in Panama.
The Liga Profesional de Baloncesto (LPB),also known as the LPB Panama,is the top professional basketball league in Panama. The league was formed in 2015 by six clubs. Correcaminos de Colón has been the most successful team in the league with four won championships.
Enriqueta Morales was a Panamanian nurse and feminist,who was instrumental in creating social service organizations in the country. Trained abroad in Belgium,she returned to Panama and founded feminist organizations aimed at improving the socio-economic and political status of women in the country. Becoming the superintendent of the Red Cross in the mid-1920s,she oversaw the creation of medical facilities and institutions to help women,children and the poor. Spending the years of World War II assisting the Allied Forces,she returned to Panama and served as the Secretary of the Ministry of Social Welfare,Labor and Public Health until 1950. She was a recipient of the medal Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice,for her dedication to Catholic causes.
The 1968 Panamanian coup d'état was the military coup that took place in the Republic of Panama on October 11,1968,when the National Guard,led by Major Boris Martínez,Lieutenant Colonel Jose Humberto Ramos,Rubén Darío Paredes and other military officers overthrew President Arnulfo Arias,who was elected in the May 12 general election and assumed office on October 1.

Antonio Dominguez Richa was a Panamanian politician,businessman,and philanthropist. He was the district councilor,director of immigration of Panama,a vice deputy to the Central America Parliament,and a founding member of the Panameñista party. He was also the owner of a business that went by the name of Villa de Caracas. He was married to Carmen "Carmensita" Alvarez and had six children,including Antonio Dominguez Alvarez and Jose Antonio Dominguez.
General elections were held in Panama on 5 May 2024 to elect a new President of Panama,members of the National Assembly and local governments. Erika Podest Cardoze is a Panamanian earth scientist who works at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). She held an early interest in ecological systems and technological research,going on to earn degrees in engineering and environmental fields. Joining JPL after earning a Ph.D.,she has worked on multiple NASA projects,particularly those involving satellite launches and observations of Earth's ecosystems through satellite imagery,including the Soil Moisture Active Passive and NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar satellites. She has also spent significant time giving conferences and science presentations in Panama and elsewhere in order to increase the amount of children who choose to pursue scientific study.
