Sutton Civic Offices is a municipal facility in St Nicholas Way, Sutton, London. It is the headquarters of Sutton London Borough Council.
The current civic offices were commissioned to replace the old municipal offices at the corner of Throwley Road and the High Street which had been designed in the Baroque style and completed in 1902. [1] [2] The old municipal offices had been established as the offices of the Sutton Urban District Council and went on to become the headquarters of the Municipal Borough of Sutton and Cheam in 1934. [3] They continued to be the local seat of government when the enlarged London Borough of Sutton was formed in 1965 [4] but, having been assessed as uneconomic to maintain, were demolished in 1972. [1]
In the 1960s civic leaders had decided to procure new civic offices: the site they selected was occupied by three large private houses. [5] They decided that the new civic offices, which would take over the role of headquarters of the London Borough of Sutton, would form part of a larger complex involving the civic offices to the south, a public library to the west and Sutton College to the north. [6] It was also intended to have a separate building for the council chamber but this was never built for financial reasons. [7]
The new building, which was designed by the assistant borough architect, Charles Sierakowski, [lower-alpha 1] in the modernist style, was completed in phases between 1972 and 1975. [9] [10] [lower-alpha 2]
The design involved an asymmetrical main frontage onto St Nicholas Way with a canopied glass entrance to the civic offices and to the public library on the left, and a canopied glass entrance to the college on the right: there were continuous rows of glazing with brickwork above and below on the first, second and third floors throughout the complex. [13] In the absence of a purpose-built council chamber, a multi-purpose area within the public library known as the "Europa Gallery" was designated as available for use by the borough council for their meetings. In October 2022, Sutton Council announced plans to sell the civic offices, the public library, and Sutton College, as well as the Gibson Road Car Park and Secombe Theatre, for housing. [16]

It is 10 miles (16 km) south-southwest of Charing Cross, one of the fourteen metropolitan centres in the London Plan. The population of the town was counted as 58,880 in the 2021 United Kingdom census, while the borough overall counted 209,639.
The Civic Centre is a municipal building located in the Cultural Quarter area within the city of Southampton, England. It comprises offices occupied by Southampton City Council, the SeaCity Museum, the Guildhall, the Southampton City Art Gallery, and the city library. It was designed by the English architect Ernest Berry Webber in the Classical style in 1929 and constructed over a ten-year period. It was completed in 1939. Pevsner's Hampshire: South describes it as "the most ambitious civic building erected in the provinces in the interwar years". It was designated as a Grade II* listed building in 1980.

Plymouth Civic Centre is the former headquarters of Plymouth City Council on Armada Way in Plymouth, Devon, England. The building is in two sections, comprising a 14-storey tower block which housed the council's offices, and a two-storey southern wing called the Council House which includes the council chamber and is linked to the tower block by a bridge at first floor level. The building was completed in 1962. The council sold the tower block part of the building in 2015, but the Council House remains the council's meeting place. The whole complex has been a Grade II listed building since 2007.
