Suzan Faith Mutesi (born June 21, 1986) [1] is a Ugandan-Australian actress, author and fashion designer. She has earned recognition for her works to empower African communities. [2]

Early life and education

Suzan Mutesi was born in Uganda and later moved to Australia when she was 11. [3] She completed her secondary education at Delany College in Granville. [4] She later earned a Bachelor of Design, majoring in fashion, at the Raffles KvB Institute of Technology in Sydney. [5] She trained in acting at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) through the Open Program in 2005.[ citation needed ]

Career

Films

In 2024, Mutesi appeared in the romantic comedy film Carmen & Bolude. [6] [7] In 2023, she worked on the feature film Streets of Colour. [8] [9] Her other notable Australian film credits include Ruby's Choice (2021) and Moon Rock for Monday (2020). [10] [11] She is set to star in the upcoming action-crime film Sanctuary Pariahs, which is currently in pre-production. [12] [13]

Mutesi's television appearances include roles in The Challenge: Australia , Heartbreak High (2022, uncredited), and the crime documentary series Deadly Women . [14] [15] She has also appeared in several commercials, including an international campaign for Nicabate (2013–2014), and was a regular featured extra on Channel 7’s drama series Headland (2005–2006).[ citation needed ]

Writing

In 2019, Mutesi published her debut novel, Princess Anendha of Zamikisa: The African Princess, which explores themes of heritage and identity. [16] This was followed in 2020 by a children’s book titled Unapologetically Black: Afro Sisters, which focuses on the resilience and empowerment of African women. [17] The book was praised by Vogue for its portrayal of personal experiences with discrimination and hardship. [2] In 2023, she released a memoir titled The Immigrant That Found Her Unapologetic Voice, detailing her journey from her upbringing in Uganda to her career in the Australian fashion and entertainment industries. [18] In 2024, she released a contemporary guide to dating “Love Beyond 30s”. [19]

Fashion and advocacy

Mutesi previously founded Heart of Gold Africa to support rural African communities and now works on empowering women and minority groups. [20] [21]

Personal life

In 2022, Mutesi briefly dated comedian David Walliams after a public event in Sydney. [22] [23] She is reported to have gone on over 1,000 dates in eight years and uses automated emails to decline further contact. [24] [25]

Awards

Mutesi was awarded African designer of the year in 2012. [29] [30] She was honored with the Fashion Icon of the Year award at the Afro-Australia Music and Movie Awards (AAMMA) in 2014. [20] [21] In the same year, she received the Best Fashion Contributor in the Diaspora award in Uganda. [31] She also received Champion Award in 2019 and Professional Excellence Award in 2023 from Celebration of African Australians NSW. [32] [33]
