The West Australian Football League is an Australian rules football league based in Perth, in Western Australia. The league currently consists of ten teams, which play each other in a 20-round season usually lasting from April to September, with the top five teams playing off in a finals series, culminating in a Grand Final. The league also runs reserves, colts (under-19) and women's competitions.
The Swan Districts Football Club, nicknamed the Swans, is an Australian rules football club playing in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) and WAFL Women's (WAFLW). The club is based at Bassendean Oval, in Bassendean, an eastern suburb of Perth, Western Australia. The club was formed in 1933, and joined the then-Western Australian National Football League (WANFL) in 1934, acting as a successor to the Midland Junction Football Club, which had disbanded during World War I, in the Perth Hills region.
John Herbert Todd was an Australian rules footballer who played for the South Fremantle Football Club in the West Australian National Football League (WANFL). He also coached with success at East Fremantle, South Fremantle, Swan Districts, West Coast, and Western Australia. The only coach that comes close to John Todd in games coached is Jock McHale, who coached Collingwood. Mick Malthouse later broke McHale’s coaching record for games coached, but McHale still has won the most VFL/AFL premierships (8). Malthouse won 3 Premierships. A State Memorial service was held on 21 August 2024 for John Todd.
The Bob Skilton Medal is an annual Australian rules football award presented to the player(s) adjudged the best and fairest at the Sydney Swans throughout the Victorian Football League/Australian Football League (VFL/AFL) season. It is named after Bob Skilton, who won the award a record nine times from 1958 to 1968. The voting system as of the 2017 AFL season, consists of five coaches giving an undetermined number of players up to ten votes each after every match. Players can receive a maximum of 50 votes for a game.
Gerard Joseph Neesham is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Sydney Swans in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and for the East Fremantle Football Club, Swan Districts Football Club and Claremont Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL).
Luke Blackwell is an Australian rules footballer. He formerly played for Carlton in the Australian Football League (AFL), and for Claremont in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) where he was the winner of the 2011 Sandover Medal.
The Goldfields Football League is an Australian rules football league based in the Goldfields region of Western Australia. Founded in 1896 as Hannans District Football Association, the league enjoyed a seat and full voting rights on the Australian National Football Council until 1919. The first clubs to play Australian football were formed within the region, and the league helped popularise the sport in the region, helping to establish the sport and supplant Rugby in popularity. The GFL was known as the Goldfields Football Association (GFA) from 1901–07 and 1920–25, and as the Goldfields National Football League (GNFL) from 1926–87.
Travis Edmonds is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Swan Districts Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL). He was also drafted into the Australian Football League three times: to Hawthorn in 1991, to West Coast in 1993, and Fremantle in 1995, but only played one senior game, with Fremantle in 1995. Edmonds debuted for Swan Districts in 1990, and won club best and fairest awards in 1992, 1993, 1997, 2000, and 2001, as well as captaining the club from 2000 to 2002. He also played four interstate matches for Western Australia. Edmonds finished his career with 262 games for Swan Districts, a club record. After the conclusion of his WAFL career in 2005, he was recruited by the Carey Park Football Club in the South West Football League (SWFL), where he played two seasons, winning the league's best and fairest award, the Hayward Medal, in 2006 and captaining the club in 2007.
John James Leonard was a player and coach of Australian rules football in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) and the Victorian Football League in the period 1922 to 1946.
Mervyn Frederick McIntosh was an Australian rules footballer in the (then) West Australian National Football League (WANFL). A brilliant ruckman, he was awarded the Sandover Medal as the fairest and best player in the league three times while playing with the Perth Football Club.
John Cameron Sheedy was an Australian rules footballer and coach. He played for East Fremantle and East Perth in the Western Australian National Football League (WANFL) and South Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Sheedy is considered one of the greatest ever footballers from Western Australia, being the first player from that state to play 300 games in elite Australian rules football, and was a member of both the Australian Football Hall of Fame and the West Australian Football Halls of Fame.
William Herbert John Walker is a former Australian rules footballer who represented Swan Districts in the West Australian National Football League (WANFL). He was the winner of the 1965, 1966, 1967 and 1970 Sandover Medals.
Ryan Edwin Turnbull is a former Australian rules footballer who represented the West Coast Eagles in the Australian Football League (AFL). Turnbull was a member of the Eagles' 1994 premiership side, and was the club's first-choice ruckman for much of the 1990s. He also played with the Claremont and East Perth Football Clubs in the West Australian Football League (WAFL), and was awarded the Sandover Medal in 2001 as the best player in the competition, as well as winning the Simpson Medal in 2001 and 2002 as the best player in the league's grand final. In State of Origin football, Turnbull represented Western Australia in five matches between 1992 and 1999, and captained a Western Australian representative team in 2003.
Phillip Michael Narkle is a former Australian rules football player of Indigenous Australian descent who played for St Kilda and West Coast in the Australian Football League (AFL) and Swan Districts Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) during the mid-late 1970s and early 1990s. Younger brother of Keith Narkle who also played for Swan Districts, Phil generally played on the wing position. Regarded as a highly skilled and determined footballer with tremendous pace, Phil was perfectly suited to the wing position where he could turn defence into attack.
Rhys Palmer is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the Fremantle Football Club, Greater Western Sydney Giants and Carlton Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He won the AFL Rising Star award in 2008.
Allan Melvyn "Mel" Whinnen MBE is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the West Perth Football Club in the Western Australian National Football League (WANFL) from 1960 to 1977. Whinnen played 367 premiership games for West Perth, a WAFL record, playing in four premiership sides and finishing runner-up in the Sandover Medal on two occasions, as well as winning West Perth's best and fairest award, the Breckler Medal, on a record nine occasions.
Matt Riggio is an Australian rules footballer who recently played for the North Melbourne in the Australian Football League (AFL). Riggio was a second round draft selection, number 28 overall, in the 2005 AFL Draft. He had previously played with West Australian Football League (WAFL) club Peel Thunder and is now currently playing for Swan Districts in the WAFL.
Wayde Twomey is an Australian rules footballer who played for the Carlton Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL).
Shane Beros is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Swan Districts in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) from 1998 to 2008. He was the winner of the 2003 Sandover Medal.
Domenico "Mick" Grasso is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Swan Districts in the West Australian Football League (WAFL). Originally from Bunbury, Western Australia, Grasso began his career with the South Bunbury Football Club in the South West Football League (SWFL). Recruited by Swan Districts prior to the start of the 1987 season, he made his debut for the club in round one. Grasso won a club best and fairest award in 1988 & 1990 as well as the 1990 Sandover Medal as the best player in the competition. Injuries forced his retirement from the WAFL in 1992, although he remained involved in country football afterwards, in both playing and coaching roles.
