Sway is a Canadian thriller drama film directed by Charlie Hamilton and Zachary Ramelan, and released in 2024. [1]

Contents

The film stars Emmanuel Kabongo as James "Sway" Drayton, a Black community leader whose life begins to unravel after he is blackmailed by a woman after a one-night stand, and his brother is simultaneously abducted by a mysterious gang who are threatening his family. [1]

Cast

The cast is led by Emmanuel Kabongo as James "Sway", and also includes Mishael Morgan, Lovell Adams-Gray, Karl Campbell, Brittany Raymond, Paul Amos, Blake Johnston, Tony Ofori, Prosha Hussein, Ashton Ayres, Carlisle J. Williams, Conni Miu, Husnain Sher and Chad Andrews.

Production

The film marked Kabongo's feature debut as a producer. [2] It was shot in 2023, in the Regent Park neighbourhood of Toronto, Ontario. [3]

Distribution

The film premiered at the 2024 Pan African Film Festival in the United States, [4] and had its Canadian premiere the following week at the 2024 Toronto Black Film Festival. [1]

It screened in the Borsos Competition program at the 2024 Whistler Film Festival. [5]

Kabongo also co-produced the series.

The Borsos Competition is the main awards program for Canadian feature films screening at the annual Whistler Film Festival. Introduced for the first time in 2004, the juried competition presents six awards annually to honour films, actors, screenplays, directors, cinematographers and editors in Canadian cinema. Initially, only films that were having their world premieres at Whistler were eligible for the competition, although this requirement was soon dropped as the festival had difficulty attracting entrants who were willing to forego larger film festivals such as TIFF or the FNC, and thereafter films selected for competition only had to be a regional premiere within the Western Canada region.

The film stars Danielle Deadwyler as a matriarch of descendants of African American farmers who settled in 1875 in rural Canada after the first Civil War. Two hundred years later, they are trying to survive in a decimated future. It is set to be released by Mongrel Media in Canada.

Darkest Miriam is a 2024 Canadian drama film, directed by Naomi Jaye. Adapted from Martha Baillie's novel The Incident Report, the film stars Britt Lower as Miriam, a librarian in Toronto who leads a closed-off, grief-stricken life after her father's death; amid a series of strange incidents at the library, she meets and begins a romance with Janko, a Slovenian immigrant who opens her up to new possibilities.
