In several countries’ sports, a fight song is a song associated with a team. In both professional and amateur sports, fight songs are a popular way for fans to cheer for their team, and are also laden with history; in singing a fight song, fans feel part of a large, time-honored tradition. Although the term "fight song" is primarily used in the United States and Canada the use of fight songs is commonplace around the world, but they may also be referred to as team anthems, team songs or games songs in other countries, including Australia, Mexico and New Zealand. Fight songs differ from stadium anthems, used for similar purposes, in that they are usually written specifically for the purposes of the team, whereas stadium anthems are not. In Australian Rules Football it is tradition for the song to be sung by the winning team at the end of the game.

The Eastern Michigan Eagles, formerly known as the Normalites and the Hurons, are the athletic teams for Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan, United States. The Eagles compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division I level as members of the Mid-American Conference (MAC). The only exception is the women's rowing program, which is a member of the Colonial Athletic Association. Altogether, the Eagles have won three NCAA Division II national championships and 13 NAIA Division I national championships in five different sports ; moreover, EMU has been NCAA Division I national runner-up twice. In 1940, the men's cross country team finished second to Indiana University at the national meet hosted by Michigan State University.

Swoop is the mascot used for the Eastern Michigan Eagles to represent its NCAA Division 1 Athletic program. EMU is one of several American universities use the name Swoop as their athletic program mascots. The "Swoop" character is sometimes depicted as an American bald eagle wearing an EMU sports jersey.
The 2014 NBA Summer League consists of two pro basketball leagues organized by the NBA and the Orlando Magic just after the 2014 NBA Draft. Ten teams took part in the week-long summer league at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida, from July 5 to 11, 2014. The other summer league was the Las Vegas NBA Summer League, having taken place at the Thomas & Mack Center and Cox Pavilion in Paradise, Nevada from July 11 to 21, 2014, with 23 NBA teams and the NBA D-League Select team participating. The Houston Rockets, Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers participated in both leagues.
Swoop is Eastern Washington University's athletics mascot. He is modeled after an eagle, in reference to the nickname of the university's athletic teams, the Eagles. The mascot first appeared in September 1973 when the Eastern Washington State College changed the name of its athletic teams from "the Savages" to "the Eagles". The name "Swoop" was subsequently adopted in 2004.
