Sylhet is a metropolitan city located in the northeastern region of Bangladesh. It is the administrative center of Sylhet Division. It is situated on the banks of the Surma River. The city has a population of approximately 700,000 people, making it the fifth-largest city in Bangladesh.
Moulvibazar also spelled Maulvibazar, Moulavibazar, and Maulavibazar, is the southeastern district of Sylhet Division in northeastern Bangladesh, named after the town of Moulvibazar. It is bordered by the Indian states of Tripura and Assam to the south and east, respectively; by the Bangladeshi districts of Habiganj to the west and Sylhet to the north.

Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran was a Bangladeshi politician and the first mayor of Sylhet City, a role he was elected to twice. In 2013, he lost to Ariful Haque Choudhury by nearly 3,000 votes. He was also a member on the standing Committee of Awami League. He died on 15 June 2020, from COVID-19 at the age of 69.

According to the Washington Post Noor al-Deen, like Abu Zubaydah, was sent to Morocco by the CIA, so he too could be subjected to "enhanced interrogation techniques"
Tasneem Khalil is an exiled Bangladeshi journalist. He is Editor in chief of Netra News. He previously worked for The Daily Star and was a stringer for CNN and a consultant for Human Rights Watch. During the 2006–2008 Bangladesh emergency, he was detained on 11 May 2007 and tortured while in the custody of Bangladesh's intelligence service. Khalil currently lives in Örebro, Sweden, where he is publisher and editor of Independent World Report, a world news magazine focused on human rights issues.
Syed Mohammad Ali was a Bengali journalist and editor. Ali began his career in East Pakistan. He became an editor for several newspapers in East Asia, including The Bangkok Post in Thailand, the Hong Kong Standard in British Hong Kong and The New Nation in Singapore. Ali also worked for UNESCO. In 1991, Ali founded The Daily Star in Bangladesh during the country's democratic transition.
Gulzar Uddin Ahmed, also known as Colonel Gulzar Ahmed, was the founding director of the intelligence wing and also served Additional Director General of Rapid Action Battalion. Until his death, he was a Colonel of the Bangladesh Army and also Sector Commander and Deputy Director General of Bangladesh Rifles.
Deaths along the Bangladesh–India border occur many times a year as result of people attempting to illegally cross into the Republic of India from Bangladesh, cross border firing and cattle smuggling. Bangladesh and India share a 4,096 kilometer border. To prevent smuggling and illegal migration from Bangladesh, the Indian Border Security Force exercises its controversial "Shoot-on-sight" policy. Under this policy, the BSF can shoot any person on site with or without cause. A large portion of the victims are cattle traders and farmers with land near the border.
The Daily Sylheter Dak popularly known as the Sylheter Dak, is a local daily newspaper in Bangladesh, published from Sylhet in the Bengali language. The Sylheter Dak was founded on 18 July 1984. The newspaper, more than 30 years old, is the most widely circulated daily newspaper in Sylhet.
Abdul Jabbar was an Awami League politician, activist and a Jatiya Sangsad member representing now-defunct Sylhet-13 constituency. He was awarded a posthumous Ekushey Padak in 2020 for his contributions to the Bengali Language Movement and Bangladesh Liberation War. He was the founding General Secretary of the Awami League's Kulaura branch in 1964.
Mushāhid Aḥmad Bāyampūrī was a Pakistani Bengali Muslim theologian, teacher, writer and politician. He was a member of the 3rd National Assembly of Pakistan as a representative of Sylhet-II.
