Sylvester Daniel is a person known for having a criminal history and being a key witness in the cases for the death of Sohrabuddin Sheikh and Tulsiram Prajapati killing.

Early life

Daniel's parents both had careers in healthcare. [1] They lived in Rajasthan. [1] Daniel had good grades as a student. [1] He also played sports. [1]

History sheet

When in jail he met a local crime boss who recruited him for more crimes. [1] Again in jail he met Tulsiram Prajapati who introduced him to Sohrabuddin Sheikh. [1] The local criminal culture and police knew of the three as a criminal trio who collaborated. [2] Police later charged Daniel, Tulsiram, and Sohrabuddin with the murder of Hamid Lala, who was another crime boss. [1]

In December 2004 the police arrested Sohrabuddin, Tulsiram, and Daniel for the case known as the "Popular Builders firing". [3] His charge was firing guns at real estate developers with Tulsiram. [3] In this case, these three fired guns at the Patel brothers, who were owners of the Popular Builders real estate company. [3]

Witness in Sohrabuddin case

Daniel came to national attention as a witness in the death of Sohrabuddin Sheikh and its connected Tulsiram Prajapati killing. [1]

In October 2011 after a court appearance Daniel escaped from police custody. There were various stories explaining how he escaped. [4] One story is that he escaped during a toilet break, and another is that he escaped when the police took him to visit his sick mother at her home. [4] Another story is that several police officers drank alcohol with him at his home, and that Daniel escaped after getting them drunk. [5] Another story is that police wanted Daniel to escape. [6]

After escaping Daniel bought a gun. [7] Within 24 hours of escaping police arrested him again. [2]

The police administration charged 5 officers for their actions which led to Daniel's escape. [8]

The Central Bureau of Investigation petitioned the court to not let Daniel out of jail for his own safety, and to thereafter have his legal proceedings in the jail. [9]

In July 2012 Daniel got bail and left jail. [3]

Haren Pandya was the Home Minister of Gujarat in India. He was murdered in 2003 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, when he was sitting in his car, after a morning walk in the Law Garden area in Ahmedabad.

Amit Shah Minister of Home Affairs (India)

Amit Anilchandra Shah is an Indian politician currently serving as the Minister of Home Affairs. He served as the President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from 2014 to 2020. This encounter led to the arrest of a number of local people, leading to widespread allegations and protests by political parties, civil society groups and activists, especially teachers and students of the Jamia Millia Islamia University. Several political organizations like Rashtriya Ulama Council which brought a full train of protestors from Azamgarh to Jantar Mantar, Delhi demanding an independent Judicial Enquiry whereas the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) demanded a judicial inquiry into the encounter, in the Parliament, as "new versions" of the encounter, started appearing in the newspapers. Subsequently, on the Delhi High Court's directive on 21 May 2009, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in its 22 July report cleared the police of any violations of rights. Public speculations and debate however continued.

Ishrat Jahan case

The Ishrat Jahan encounter case is an ongoing criminal case in the Gujarat state of India, in which the Indian Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) initially accused officers of the Ahmedabad Police Crime Branch and members of the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB) of Ahmedabad of jointly having carried out a staged "encounter killing" by shooting dead four people on 15 June 2004.

Dahyaji Gobarji Vanzara, popularly known as D G Vanzara, is the former Deputy Inspector-General of Police from Gujarat, India. He was in judicial custody from 2007 until his bail in 2015 on charges of having conducted a series of extrajudicial killings, while heading the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS). He was acquitted in Sohrabuddin case in 2017.

Prashant Dayal is an Indian journalist, who broke the story of Sohrabuddin encounter case in November 2006. He currently reports as correspondents for multiple print media organizations, including The Times of India. He also publishes a column titled 'Jivti Varta'.

Tulsiram Prajapati was a man, who was killed while in custody at 5 am on 28 December 2006. The case is widely believed to have been an encounter killing by the Gujarat Police. DIG D.G. Vanzara has been in jail for seven years, on charges of having organised this encounter, among others.

Anandpal Singh was an Indian gangster mainly active in the cities of Rajasthan.

Vikas Dubey was an Indian history-sheeter and gangster-turned-politician based in Kanpur Dehat district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The first criminal case against him was registered in the early 1990s, and by 2020, he had over 60 criminal cases against his name. He was connected to the killing of a minister of state, and in another incident, was the main accused in the killing of eight policemen during an attempted arrest. Uttar Pradesh Police declared him an absconder with a bounty of ₹5 lakh before he was finally arrested on 9 July 2020 in Ujjain. He was killed on 10 July 2020 in an encounter, after the police vehicle carrying him met with an accident.

Rajnish Rai was a deputy inspector general of police for the Indian Police Service. He began service after graduating with the 1992 cadre. In 2019 he joined the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad as an assistant professor.

Rajkumar Pandian is an Indian Police Service officer. He came to attention over claims in the death of Sohrabuddin Sheikh. From 2016 he was Inspector-general of police in Junagadh, even while the Sohrabuddin case was in courts. In 2018 the Bombay High Court upheld his discharge from this case.

Ashish Pandya is a sub-inspector in the Indian Police Service. He came to prominence in the media as the leader of the police force accused of a fake encounter in the Tulsiram Prajapati killing.

Abhay Chudasma is an officer in the Indian Police Service. He graduated with the 1999 cadre.
