T. J. Gnanavel is an Indian film director and screenwriter who works in the Tamil film industry.

Early life and career

Gnanavel graduated from Loyola College, Chennai. He holds a PhD in Tamil literature, [1] and worked as a journalist before his cinematic career. [2]

Gnanavel made his debut as a dialogue writer for Raththa Sarithiram (2010) and Payanam (2011) before working as an assistant director. [3] [4] In 2017, he made his directorial debut with the comedy Kootathil Oruthan about an ordinary man, starring Ashok Selvan and Priya Anand, which released to average reviews. [4] [5] He received critical acclaim for his next film Jai Bhim (2021), which was based on a case handled by Justice K. Chandru. Gnanavel had interviewed Chandru before he handled the case while working for Ananda Vikatan . [1] He later directed Vettaiyan , and in late 2024 began working on Dosa King. [2]

Jai Bhim is a 2021 Indian Tamil-language legal drama film that was directed by T. J. Gnanavel, and produced by Jyothika and Suriya under the banner of 2D Entertainment. The film stars Suriya, Lijomol Jose and Manikandan with Rajisha Vijayan, Prakash Raj, Guru Somasundaram, and Rao Ramesh in supporting roles. The film is about police bias and state violence against a marginalised community. Jai Bhim is based on a 1993 Cuddalore incident that involves a legal case fought by Justice K. Chandru; it revolves around Sengeni and Rajakannu, a couple from the Irular tribe. Police arrested Rajakannu and he later went missing from the police station. Sengeni seeks the help of lawyer Chandru to seek justice for her husband.

The film stars Rajinikanth as Athiyan, a senior police officer, who accidentally shoots an innocent person during an encounter killing, while investigating the murder of a teacher. The cast also features veteran Hindi actor Amitabh Bachchan, Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati, Manju Warrier, Ritika Singh, Dushara Vijayan, Rohini, Rao Ramesh, Abhirami and Ramesh Thilak.

The film features musical score composed by Sean Roldan, with lyrics written by Yugabharathi, Raju Murugan and Arivu. Preceded by three singles—"Power", "Thala Kodhum" and "Sendumalli"—the soundtrack was released by Sony Music India on 1 November 2021, with a bonus song "Manniley Eeramundu" unveiled after the film's release. Vettaiyan is the soundtrack album to the 2024 Indian Tamil-language film of the same name directed by T. J. Gnanavel and produced by Subaskaran Allirajah's Lyca Productions starring Rajinikanth in the titular lead role. The film's musical score is composed by Anirudh Ravichander. The songs "Manasilaayo", "Hunter Vantaar" and "Uchathila" were released as singles from the album. The full album containing 9 tracks was released by Sony Music India on 14 October 2024.
