TNL Onstage is an annual music talent competition based in Colombo, Sri Lanka, organised by the TNL Radio Network. It is currently in its seventeenth season. The competition takes place over a four-month period, during which the participants (musicians and artists from all musical genres) undergo a training programme inclusive of workshops, training sessions and one-on-one work with established musicians.

Contents

TNL Onstage commenced in 1999. [1] The inaugural winners of the competition was rock 'n' roll band, Independent Square. [2]

In 2013 the competition won the 'Most Fashionable Contest' award at the Fashion Asia Awards held in China., [3] [4] [5] a category assessing events from Malaysia, Taiwan, Cambodia, Thailand and China.

The 2014 finale of TNL Onstage took place on 13 September 2014 at the Viharamahadevi Amphitheater, with the winner of the soloist category, Nikhil, Constellation winning the best band category [6] [7] and DJ Hiranya winning the spin off category.

The Competition

Each year, musicians from around Sri Lanka submit recorded demos to TNL Radio Network. Station staff listen to the demos and make their first selections. Those chosen are called and given the opportunity to compete in the first round of Onstage. Judges evaluate musicians during each round on the basis of musicality. At the end of Onstage, one winner is selected for each of the following categories: Best Band, Best Soloist, and Best Musician. The winners are awarded cash prizes. [8]

Past Winners

Independent Square won the title for Best Band at the first TNL Onstage competition in 1999. [9]

Soul Skinner won the title of Best Band at TNL Onstage 2004. [10] The band subsequently released their debut EP titled 'River Flow' to a highly receptive audience, resulting in a sold out release. Their debut album 'Gateway to Eternity' was released in 2005 and featured original tracks including Illusions, War at mind, Angel Dust, Chaotic Symphony and the title track Gateway to Eternity. [11]

Tantrum the Colombo based heavy metal band, won Best Band at TNL Onstage 2005. In 2006, they released their first EP, The Destruction Begins. [12]

Magic Box Mixup got their start in 2005, and went on to win the People’s Choice Award at TNL Onstage in 2006. The band is currently one of the most popular English language bands in Sri Lanka. [13]

The Rebels were named a runner-up at TNL Onstage 2008. [14]

Road Kill won Best Band at TNL Onstage in 2011. [15]

Magician’s Toolbox won best band at TNL Onstage in 2012. The band also won for Best Original Song. [16]

Audacity won the title of Best Band in 2013. They were the first female band to do so in the history of the competition. [17]

Constellation won best band TNL Onstage in 2014. Constellation created history in winning all major awards that year,which were Best Musician, Best Original Song, Best Look and the most prestigious award of the night, Best Band. Constellation was the first band to achieve this feat. [18]


Legacy

TNL Onstage has become a major staple of the music industry in Sri Lanka. Many professional musicians see Onstage as a perfect means of jumpstarting a local music career. In an article for the Sunday Times, keyboardist for the Rebels, Sandeep Milan John said of the experience, "We didn't win, but being placed runners-up has been enough to keep the gigs coming in." [19]

TNL Radio Network

TNL first began broadcasting in 1993. The Network was the first in Asia to stream online, and now comprises three stations — TNL Radio, Lite FM, and Rhythm FM. [20] TNL Radio includes a news department focusing on local coverage of the latest events in Sri Lankan politics and culture. [21]

Malaka Dewapriya (Sinhala: මාලක දේවප්‍රිය, IPA: [maːləkə deːʋaprijə] is a Sri Lankan film maker, visual artist, Sinhala Radio Play writer, short film and video director.

Tantrum was a heavy metal band based in Colombo, Sri Lanka, originally formed in 2002. The band was one of the early pioneers among the first wave of "new millennium" heavy metal bands in Sri Lanka when the genre saw a rise in popularity in the country after the year 2000.

Civilization One (band)

Civilization One was launched in 2006 by singer Chitral Somapala together with guitarist Aldo Lanobile, Simone Campete, Pierre-Emmanuel Pelisson and Luca Cartasegna. Their intention was to found a band which combines hard and aggressive riffs and the sensitivity of classical music combined with memorable vocals and choruses as achieved by the classical Heavy Metal bands.

Henrik Flyman Swedish musician

Henrik Flyman is an award winning composer, guitarist and producer. He is active in the bands Evil Masquerade and Lacrimosa.

Roshan Ranawana is a Sri Lankan film actor and a model. Ranawana was awarded the most popular actors award at the Derana film awards in 2013.

TNL TV

TNL TV is an English and Sinhala-language television station in Sri Lanka, owned by Telshan Network. Launched in 1993, TNL TV was one of Sri Lanka's first privately owned television channels. Shan Wickremesinghe, the chairman of Telshan Network, is the brother of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Dinesh Subasinghe Sri Lankan musician

Dinesh Subasinghe is a Sri Lankan composer, violinist, and music producer. He composed Karuna Nadee, a Buddhist oratorio, and re-introduced a lost, ancient musical instrument known as the ravanahatha to Sri Lanka. He is also a film and television composer whose works integrate western and eastern classical music with electronic music, Buddhist music, folk music, traditional orchestral arrangements, and world music genres. From 2002 to 2009 he led the pop classical band, Dee R Cee Members.

Hemal Sachindra Ranasinghe ) is an actor in Sri Lankan cinema. He earned the critics' award for 'Best Actor' and 'Most Popular Actor' at the Derana Film Awards in both 2016 and 2018 becoming one of Sri Lanka's most popular actors of modern cinema. Ranasinghe started his career as a model, appearing in several advertising commercials. He made his cinema debut in 2012 appearing in Super Six. In 2016 he won Most Popular Actor, and Best Promising Actor at the Hiru Golden Film Award.

Dasun Pathirana Sri Lankan actor

Dasun Pathirana [Sinhala]), is a model and an award-winning actor in Sri Lankan cinema, theater and television. He won an award at Indie Fest 2014 as best actor in a leading role. He received his first Sarasaviya award in 2018.

Plecto Aliquem Capite is a noise black metal band based in Colombo, Sri Lanka, formed in 2008.

Chathurika Jayamani Peiris is an actress in Sri Lankan cinema and television. She is best known for the roles in television serials Sepalika, Swayanjatha and Hiru Thanivela.

Raigam Telees

Raigam Tele'es is an award bestowed to distinguished individuals involved with the Sri Lanka's television screen, each year by the Kingdom of Raigam, Sri Lanka in recognition of the various contributions made by them to the Sri Lankan teledrama industry, television programs and media sector in the preceding year. The Raigam Tele'es is one of the most popular television program events in Sri Lanka. The awards were first introduced in 2005 and continuously undertaken without interruptions.

Sri Lankan Hip Hop is a part of the Asian hip hop culture. This multilingual genre features Sinhala, Tamil and English.

The Sri Lanka Journalism Awards for Excellence is an awards ceremony held annually in Sri Lanka to recognize the achievements of print media journalists working in the country’s three main languages – Sinhala, Tamil and English.

Udari Chamika Warnakulasooriya is a Sri Lankan actress in Sri Lankan cinema and television. She is best known for the roles in television serials such as Bonda Meedum and Pini.

Wakunugoda Gayathri Irosha Dias [Sinhala]), popularly as Gayathri Dias, is an actress in Sri Lankan cinema and television. Apart from acting, she is also a beauty queen, a presenter, a beautician and a entrepreneur.
