TRP.P (pronounced "trippy" [1] ) are a Canadian R&B and hip hop duo from Toronto, Ontario. [2] The duo consists of producer Truss and singer-songwriter pHoenix Pagliacci. [3] [4] [5]

Contents

The duo released their debut EP, titled TRP.P, in 2017 and their debut album, titled 2TRP.P, in 2019. [6] Their debut album received positive reviews from music critics, such as Exclaim! , [7] and NOW Magazine named the album the 10th best Toronto album of 2019. [8]

History

Formed in the summer of 2017, TRP.P's debut self-titled EP was released in 2017. [9] At the time, Pagliacci was also a member of Canadian hip hop group, The Sorority. [9] In 2018, Truss produced a track ("On Me") for The Sorority's debut album, Pledge. [10]

In early 2019, Pagliacci left The Sorority to focus on TRP.P. [3] The duo then released their debut album 2TRP.P in 2019, which was preceded by the singles “Love, Calm Down” and "Heart's Last Call". [11] [12]

In January 2020, they released a music video for their song "Chakra Con", directed by Lu Asfaha. [13] In February 2020, they performed at the 20th annual Toronto's Wavelength Winter Festival. [14]

In July 2020, they released a new single titled "Tell Me"; CBC Music called the track "a beautiful ode to reaching out to those in crisis and checking in with loved ones." [15] Later that month, they performed at the Guelph's Hillside Homeside's online music festival. [16]

Personal life

The duo are romantically involved and, as of 2020, they are engaged. [17] In an interview with Xtra, the couple discussed the importance of LGBT representation in hip hop; Truss identifies as transgender, while Pagliacci identifies as queer. [18]

Jessica Reyez is a Canadian singer and songwriter. Her 2016 single "Figures" peaked at number 58 on the Canadian Hot 100 in 2017 and was certified triple Platinum by Music Canada and Platinum by the RIAA. Her 2017 EP, Kiddo, led to four nominations at the 2018 Juno Awards, winning Breakthrough Artist. Her follow up EP, Being Human in Public, was released in 2018. It won R&B/Soul Recording of the Year at the 2019 Juno Awards and was nominated for Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 2020 Grammy Awards. Reyez again won the R&B/Soul Recording of the Year, for "Feel it Too" with Tory Lanez and Tainy, at the 2020 Juno Awards, where she was also nominated for Artist of the Year. Reyez has written songs for Calvin Harris, Kehlani, Dua Lipa and Normani, most notably penning the hit "One Kiss", and has collaborated with Eminem on multiple occasions. Her debut album, Before Love Came to Kill Us, was released on March 27, 2020, to widespread critical acclaim, and saw commercial success, entering at number thirteen on the US Billboard 200.

Snotty Nose Rez Kids are a First Nations hip hop duo composed of Haisla rappers Darren "Young D" Metz and Quinton "Yung Trybez" Nyce. They are originally from Kitamaat Village, British Columbia. Their 2017 album The Average Savage was shortlisted for the 2018 Polaris Music Prize, and for the Juno Award for Indigenous Music Album of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2019. In 2018, the duo received nominations for Best Hip Hop Album at the Indigenous Music Awards, and for Indigenous Artist of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards. Their third album TRAPLINE was released on May 10, 2019 and was later shortlisted for the 2019 Polaris Music Prize. The Sorority was a Canadian hip hop group founded in Toronto, Ontario in 2016. The group originally comprised Keysha Freshh, Lex Leosis, Haviah Mighty, and pHoenix Pagliacci. They released their debut album, Pledge, in 2018. Pagliacci left the group in early 2019 to focus on her own R&B project, TRP.P, while the remaining members continued touring. The trio disbanded after their final show on November 24, 2019 to focus on their respective solo careers.

Etmet Musa, also known by her alias Ayo Leilani and her stage name Witch Prophet, is an Ethiopian/Eritrean musician based in Toronto, Ontario. As Witch Prophet, she has released 3 albums: The Golden Octave (2018), DNA Activation (2020), and Gateway Experience (2023). She co-founded and is the co-director of 88 Days of Fortune, a collective based in Toronto since 2009 that rebranded as Heart Lake Records in 2018. She also is a member of Above Top Secret, an electro-hip hop group. Above Top Secret has released three studio albums since 2010. DNA Activation was shortlisted for the 2020 Polaris Music Prize. In 2021, she released a new song "Leilani", which appeared on the deluxe edition of DNA Activation. The deluxe edition was released July 23, 2021. Her third album as Witch Prophet, entitled Gateway Experience, was released May 1st, 2023. The first single from the album, "Energy Vampire", was released on February 23, 2023 and featured DillanPonders. Gateway Experience was longlisted for the 2023 Polaris Music Prize.

Pantayo is a Canadian quintet consisting of queer members of the Filipino diaspora formed in 2012. They combines elements of kulintang with elements of electronic, synth-pop, punk, and R&B music. Their name is Tagalog for "for us". The band consists of vocalist, bassist, and keyboardist Eirene Cloma; vocalist and agung player Michelle Cruz; vocalist, gandingan player, and sarunay player Joanna Delos Reyes; vocalist, kulintang and dabakan player Kat Estacio; and vocalist, kulintang player, and sarunay player Katrina Estacio. They were named as one of NOW Magazine's Toronto Indie Musicians to Watch in 2018.
