TSS Atalanta was a passenger vessel built for the London and South Western Railway in 1907. [2]
She was built by Gourlay Brothers in Dundee for the London and South Western Railway. She was launched on 26 April 1907 [3] by Miss Drummond, daughter of Mr Drummond, chief engineer of the Highland Railway Company, in the presence of her father and Mr. Douglas Drummond, chief engineer of the London and South Western Railway Company; Mr Drummond, jun. She was employed as a tender until 1910 when she was sold to the Great Western Railway. In 1913 she was in collision with a submerged rock near Bolt Head in Devon, when she was on an excursion trip from Plymouth to Torquay. [4]
During the First World War she was hired by the Admiralty and used as a rescue tug around the Isles of Scilly. She was renamed Atalanta III.
She returned to Plymouth after the war but was laid up out of use until sold to the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company in 1923 [5] who purchased her as a tender for Bermuda. [6]
The ship was scuttled on 11 June 1940 at Le Havre under the name La Brettoniere. [7]
Cheltenham Spa railway station serves the spa town of Cheltenham in Gloucestershire, England. Situated on the Bristol–Birmingham main line, it is managed by Great Western Railway, although most services are operated by CrossCountry. The station is about one mile from the town centre. The official name of the station is Cheltenham, however when the station was renamed in 1925, the London, Midland and Scottish Railway chose to add Spa to the station name. It is a regional interchange and the busiest station in Gloucestershire, as well as one of the busiest railway stations in South West England.

Gourlay Brothers was a marine engineering and shipbuilding company based in Dundee, Scotland. It existed between 1846 and 1908.
The Great Western Railway's ships operated in connection with the company's trains to provide services to Ireland, the Channel Islands and France. Powers were granted by Act of Parliament for the Great Western Railway (GWR) to operate ships in 1871. The following year the company took over the ships operated by Ford and Jackson on the route between Wales and Ireland. Services were operated between Weymouth, the Channel Islands and France on the former Weymouth and Channel Islands Steam Packet Company routes. Smaller GWR vessels were also used as tenders at Plymouth and on ferry routes on the River Severn and River Dart. The railway also operated tugs and other craft at their docks in Wales and South West England.
The NBR 224 and 420 Classes consisted of six steam locomotives of the 4-4-0 wheel arrangement built by the North British Railway (NBR) in 1871 and 1873. No. 224 had three claims to fame: it was the first inside-cylinder 4-4-0 engine to run in Great Britain; it was the locomotive involved in the Tay Bridge disaster; and after rebuilding in 1885, it was the only compound-expansion locomotive on the NBR, and one of just three tandem compounds in Britain.
