The T & G Building was a notable office block, located on the corner of Queen Street and Albert Street in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, built for the T&G (Temperance and General) Mutual Life Assurance Society Company in 1924. [1]
The T & G was founded in Victoria in 1876, and by 1930 had grown to become the largest ordinary-industrial life society operating solely within Australia and New Zealand. In the mid 1920s, the T&G began to build landmark office blocks buildings in all the capital cities and numerous regional centres across Australia and New Zealand. The Brisbane building was the first of these, designed by the Melbourne firm of A & K Henderson, establishing a 'modern classical' style used into the 1930s. In 1936, a 9th mansard level added, also by A&K Henderson.
The building was taken over by Lieutenant Robert Melloy of the Hirings Section, No. 1 Lines of Communication (No. 1 L of C), Australian Army, and was occupied from 20 February 1943 to 31 December 1944. [1] The tenants of the building resisted the occupation, led by a Dr Streeter, and they formed a committee to submit a protest to the Federal Government. [1] Lt. Melloy agreed to help them submit their protest, on the condition that they vacate the premises immediately a decision was made. Two hours after submitting their protest, Lt. Melloy received orders to proceed with the military occupation of the building. Upon being advised by Lt. Melloy of the outcome, Dr. Streeter was one of the first to leave the building. [1] The building was used as the Headquarters for the US Army Forces in the Far East. [1]
In 1969 the T &G replaced their building with a modern office of the tower. It is 25 storeys high and at the time was Brisbane's tallest building. [2]
Today the building houses a variety of businesses, including a doctors' surgery, [3] and a hairdressing salon. [4] Other businesses include a watch repairer and taxation accountant. An arcade was established at the ground level.

The T & G Building is a heritage listed landmark in Geelong, Victoria, Australia, on the corner of Moorabool and Ryrie Streets. The building's style is a blend of Art Deco and Classicism. Both of those styles can be noted in the buildings geometric grooves, vertical lines and stepped form. The exterior of the ground floor features chevron grill patterns, that is characteristic of Art Deco architecture.
The T & G Mutual Life Assurance Society was an insurance company that operated in Australia and New Zealand. The 'T & G' stood for 'Temperance & General'. The company was founded in Victoria in 1876, emerging from the Assurance branch of the Independent Order of Rechabites with 132 policies. The branch was severed from the I.O.R. after six years of operations.
The Lincoln American Tower is a 22-story building located at the corner of North Main and Court streets in Memphis, Tennessee. It is also a historical landmark, one of the first steel frame skyscrapers built in Memphis. The tower underwent a six-year refurbishing project starting in 2002, and despite a fire in 2006, is now open and accepting tenants.
Citibank House is an 18-storey office building in Perth, Western Australia. The 224-foot (68 m) building was opened in 1962 as the T & G Building, and was the tallest building in Perth until 1970 when Hamersley House was opened. It underwent a major refurbishment in the 1980s which significantly altered the building's external features. The building adopted its current name when Citibank became its flagship tenant. As of December 2008, the tower is the 26th-tallest completed building in Perth.
Sunlight Tower is a 40-storey skyscraper located at 248 Queen's Road East, in the Wan Chai district of Hong Kong. It stands 156 metres (512 ft) tall and has 40 floors. Designed by Andrew Lee King Fun & Associates, it was completed in 1998.

Constructed in 1955-9, the two and three storey building was designed in a 1950s version of art deco, featuring a striking vertical 36 metres (120 ft), 6 storey high clock tower on the a corner of Flinders and Stanley streets. The building was demolished in 2008.

John Francis (Jack) Hennessy (1887–1955) was an Australian architect, with the same name as his architect father, John Francis Hennessy, with whom he was in partnership as Hennessy & Hennessy from 1912 to 1924. As principal of the firm after his father retired from 1924 to 1955, he was responsible for many major Art Deco office buildings in capital cities in Australia and New Zealand in the 1930s, as well as many projects for the Catholic Church in Queensland, and the Great Court of the University of Queensland.

Kingsley Anketell Henderson was an Australian architect and businessman. He ran a successful firm in Melbourne that specialised in commercial buildings. He was involved in the creation of the United Australia Party (UAP), holding office in its organisational wing in Victoria, and served on the Malvern City Council.
