A total of eleven competitors from eleven different countries competed in this event, limited to fighters whose body weight was less than 87 kilograms.
The defending champion Yousef Karami of Iran won the gold medal after beating Park Yong-hyun of South Korea in gold medal match 4–3, He beat athletes from Bahrain and China before reaching the final. The bronze medal was shared by Yin Zhimeng of China and Nguyễn Trọng Cường from Vietnam. [1]
Athletes from Jordan, Bahrain, Indonesia and Lebanon shared the fifth place.

Yousef Karami is an Iranian taekwondo athlete who competed in the Men's 80 kg at the 2004 Summer Olympics and won the bronze medal. He is also the 2003 world champion. Karami also won gold in the 2006 Asian Games in 84 kg and in the 2010 Asian Games in 87 kg.
Tuvalu competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, from 8 to 24 August 2008. This was the nation's first ever appearance in an Olympic Game. The delegation included two track and field athletes and one weightlifter. Okilani Tinilau and Asenate Manoa participated in athletics while Logona Esau participated in the weightlifting sport. Both track and field athletes achieved national records. Logona Esau led the Tuvaluan squad as the nation's flag bearer in the parade of nations.
The 2004 Asian Indoor Athletics Championships was an international indoor athletics event took place in Tehran, Iran, between 6 and 8 February. The female events were held separately from the men's events, taking place during the morning sessions. Due to the Islamic country's customs, men were forbidden from watching the female events.
