The system was formed in 1963 from the merger of the former Granville County Schools and Oxford City schools. Granville county public schools now offers year round schools, and also the new Granville academy which offers different way of leaning.
James McLemore (1782–1834) was a Baptist minister in Montgomery, Alabama. He was a leader of the Alabama Baptist Association and founder of a number of churches. He is known also for having an African American associate minister, the enslaved Caesar Blackwell. McLemore and his descendants acquired much land which developed into the 7000-acre McLemore Plantation, which was farmed first by enslaved people and later by sharecroppers and tenants.

Thomas Gillespie was a large plantation owner in mid-to-late 18th-century North Carolina and served as commissary of the Rowan County Regiment in the North Carolina militia during the American Revolution. He spent his early life in Augusta County, Virginia before migrating to Anson County, North Carolina in about 1750, where he lived most of his life on Sills Creek in the area that became Rowan County, North Carolina in 1753. He and his wife and son were the first white settlers west of the Yadkin River. He owned a plantation of over 1,000 acres on Sills Creek in Rowan County, as well as 6,000 acres in the area of western North Carolina that became part of the state of Tennessee in 1796. He was an early elder in the Thyatira Presbyterian Church in Rowan County, which had been established by 1750. Thomas was the great-grandfather of U.S. President James K. Polk through the lineage of his daughter Lydia, who married Captain James Knox and gave birth to Jane Gracey Knox, mother of the President.
Fay Lamar Webb-Gardner was an American political hostess, businesswoman, and philanthropist. As the wife of Oliver Max Gardner, she served as the Second Lady of North Carolina from 1917 to 1923 and as First Lady of North Carolina from 1929 to 1933. When her husband's political career took them to Washington, D.C., she became known as a prominent society and political hostess and was considered one of the most popular figures in American political circles of the time. Webb-Gardner was active in cultural and civic endeavors and was a member of the American Red Cross, the Woman's Missionary Union, the North Carolina Symphony Society, the National Civic League, and the League of Women Voters, as well as Chairwoman of the North Carolina State Advisory Board of Paroles. A Democrat, she served on the North Carolina Democratic Committee and the Democratic National Committee, and was twice elected as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention.
Hugh G. Tilley was a state legislator in North Carolina. He represented Granville County in the North Carolina House of Representatives in 1887 and 1889, and was a Republican.
