Tanga is both the name of the most northerly port city of Tanzania on the west of the Indian Ocean, and the surrounding Tanga Region. It is the regional headquarters of the region. It had a population of 273,332 in 2012. The name Tanga reportedly means "sail."

Digo people, nearly all Muslims, speak the Digo language, called Chidigo by speakers, a Bantu language. They are part of the greater Mijikenda ethnic group of people which contains nine smaller groups or tribes, including the Duruma, Giriama, and others.

Ras Kigomasha Lighthouse

The Ras Kigomasha Lighthouse is located at the north western tip of Pemba, in Tanzania. It is an entirely cast iron structure and was built in 1904 by The Chance Brothers Ltd from Birmingham. The light house has a 1-storey keepers house and is still operational.
