Tanghalang Pilipino (Philippine Theater) is the leading exponent of Philippine theater and the resident drama company of the Cultural Center of the Philippines since its organization in 1987. [1] It has successfully presented hundreds of productions over more than 30 theater seasons, [2] earning numerous awards and citations while generating one of the best attendance records among the CCP's resident companies. [3]

Tanghalang Pilipino wishes to develop and train actors, playwrights, and designers with special emphasis in the production of original Filipino plays. By staging plays from the repertoire of Philippine past and plays in translation from other countries, TP hopes to bring to the experience of both artists and audience the best of Philippine and global theatre tradition. It looks forward to educating and awakening the cultural consciousness of the Filipino audiences through its regular performances and other related activities like workshops, symposia and interactions. The Tanghalang Pilipino season runs from July to March. [3] Off season, TP finalizes theater project proposals for a cause. In 2013, along with UNICEF and the AIDS Society, TP aimed to disseminate correct information about the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Using theater as a medium, an original play and workshops about HIV/AIDS were made available in Manila, Cebu and Davao. [4]

In 2020, stage productions were prematurely closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. TP launched a program billed as PansamanTANGHALAN (a portmanteau of Filipino words pansamantala and tanghalan that means 'temporary theater') on digital platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram. It is also a part of an ongoing online fundraising project called Open House for the benefit of the Performing Arts community, which has been dramatically hit by the pandemic. [5]

Felix "Nonon"Padilla was TP's founding artistic director from 1987 to 2000, directing most of its plays. He was succeeded by Herbert Go, 2001-06; and Dennis Marasigan, 2006-08. [6] Its current Artistic Director is veteran actor-teacher Fernando “Tata Nanding” Josef. [7]

Teatro Pilipino was a resident drama company of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) from 1976 to 1987. It was founded by Filipino playwright, translator, director, and educator Rolando S. Tinio, who also served as its Artistic Director.

Pride International Film Festival (PIFF) is an international LGBT film festival which advocates HIV and AIDS awareness and education through films and videos. The first festival, originally planned for 2003, took place on August 21, 2004 in Manila, Philippines. The A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino, known also as "A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino: An Elegy in Three Scenes" is a literary play written in English by Filipino National Artist for Literature Nick Joaquin in 1950. It was described as Joaquin's “most popular play," as the "most important Filipino play in English," and as “probably the best-known Filipino play.” Apart from being regarded also as the “national play of the Philippines” because of its popularity, it also became one of the important reads in English classes in the Philippines. Walang Sugat is an 1898 Tagalog-language zarzuela written by Filipino playwright Severino Reyes. The music for the original version of the play was written by Filipino composer Fulgencio Tolentino. Walang Sugat was written when the zarzuela became a "potent means" of expressing Filipino nationalism during the Spanish Occupation of the Philippines that followed three centuries of Spanish rule.

Crispin "Pen" Parungao Medina Sr. is an actor from the Philippines who started acting in theater plays in his youth. He eventually played versatile roles on the big screen and in various television shows. He became well-known after getting the role of the villainous Hagorn in the 2005 fantasy television series Encantadia. He has won the Nora Aunor Ulirang Artista Lifetime Achievement Award during the 33rd PMPC Star Awards for Movies, the Best Supporting Actor Award at the 62nd FAMAS Awards, and the Best Actor Award at the 6th Cinema One Originals Film Festival.

The Newport Performing Arts Theater (NPAT), also known as simply Newport Theater, is a performing arts center on the grounds of Newport World Resorts in Pasay, Metro Manila, the Philippines. The 1,500-seat facility opened in 2010 and holds the widest stage in the Philippines. The Philam Life Theater, also styled Philamlife Theater, was a performing arts venue at 1440 United Nations Avenue in the Ermita district of Manila, the Philippines. It opened in 1961 as the Philam Life Auditorium and was designed by Filipino architect Carlos Arguelles as part of the corporate headquarters for the Philam Life insurance company. The International Style concert hall in the eastern annex of the Philam Life Building is known for its superior acoustics and elegant interior. It served as Manila's cultural center for almost a decade and has played host to world-renowned musicians, choirs and symphony orchestras over its 53-year history, including Renata Tebaldi, Franco Corelli, Marian Anderson, Pinchas Zukerman and Cecile Licad. The theater also served as the home of the Manila Symphony Orchestra, the Manila Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philippine Educational Theater Association.

Bonifacio Parabuac Ilagan, often known just as Boni Ilagan, is a Filipino playwright, screenwriter, filmmaker, journalist, and editor best known for numerous socially-conscious, critically-acclaimed works in theater, film and television, most notably the films The Flor Contemplacion Story (1995), Dukot, Sigwa, and Deadline ; as well as his first play, Pagsambang Bayan (1976), which portrayed the human rights violations of the Marcoses. He is also one of the prominent torture victims who survived the Marcos dictatorship.
