Tanzim Ahmed Sohel Taj (born 5 January 1970) [1] is a retired Bangladesh Awami League politician and former State Minister of Home Affairs. He is the son of Bangladesh's first Prime Minister Tajuddin Ahmad. [2]

Early life

Taj was born in Dhaka on 5 January 1970 to Tajuddin Ahmad, was the first Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Syeda Zohra Tajuddin, a former convenor and presidium member of Bangladesh Awami League. [1] He has three sisters, Sharmin Ahmad Reepi, Simeen Hussain Rimi and Mahjabin Ahmad Mimi. [3] He obtained bachelor of business administration degree from the American University in Bulgaria and masters from Gordon University in the United States in 2008. [1]

Career

Taj was elected a member of Parliament in 2001 with Bangladesh Awami League nomination. He served as a member of standing committee on the ministry of youth and sports. He was re-elected from the same constituency in 2008 and joined the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's cabinet as the state minister of home affairs on 6 January 2009 and resigned from the position on 31 May the same year. Taj resigned from Bangladesh's parliament, where he had represented the Gazipur-4 constituency on 23 April 2012. [5] [6] His sister Simeen Hussain Rimi was later elected MP to replace him in his former constituency. [7]

Sohel Taj launched the hit television show 'Hotline Commando' on 20 July 2019 focusing on social issues of Bangladesh. He is the creator and host of the show. The program aired on private satellite channel RTV and is scheduled to run for 12 episodes. Due to Covid-19, the show has been on break after airing 6 episodes. It has reached a combined viewership (TV and social media) of over 20 million. [8] [9]

Tajuddin Ahmad was a Bengali statesman and freedom fighter. As the first Prime Minister of Bangladesh, he led the wartime provisional government during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. Tajuddin is regarded as one of the most influential and instrumental figures in the birth of Bangladesh, due to his leadership of the provisional government in 1971, in which he united the various political, military and cultural forces of Bengali nationalism.

2008 Bangladeshi general election

General elections were held in Bangladesh on 29 December 2008. The two main parties in the election were the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Khaleda Zia, and the Bangladesh Awami League Party, led by Sheikh Hasina. The Bangladesh Awami League Party formed a fourteen-party Grand Alliance including Ershad's Jatiya Party, while the BNP formed a four-party alliance which included the Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami. The election was originally scheduled for January 2007, but it was postponed by a military-controlled caretaker government for an extended period of time.

Jail Killing Day is observed by the Awami League (AL) of Bangladesh and many other political organisations on 3 November every year. It commemorates the killing of four Awami League and national leaders: former Vice-President Syed Nazrul Islam, former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Tajuddin Ahmed and Captain (Rtd.) Mansur Ali, and former Home Minister A H M Quamruzzaman on this date in 1975.

The 2004 Dhaka grenade attack took place at an anti-terrorism rally organised by Awami League on Bangabandhu Avenue on 21 August 2004. The attack left 24 dead and more than 300 injured. The attack was carried out at 5.22 PM after Sheikh Hasina the leader of opposition finished addressing a crowd of 20,000 people from the back of a truck. The attacks targeted Awami League president Sheikh Hasina. Hasina was injured in the attack.

Salman F Rahman

Salman Fazlur Rahman is a Bangladeshi businessman who is also a member of the Jatiya Sangsad. Currently, he is holding the rank of a cabinet minister and serving as the Private Sector Industry and Investment Adviser to Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He was ranked 1685th on the list of billionaires in the world published by Beijing-based Hurun Gobal in 2017. He is the current vice chairman of Beximco Group, one of the largest conglomerates in Bangladesh. He was the president of several trade bodies including Association of Television Channel Owners (ATCO). In January 2019, he was appointed as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's adviser on private industry and investment.

2018 Bangladeshi general election

General elections were held in Bangladesh on 30 December 2018 to elect members of the Jatiya Sangsad. The result was a landslide victory for the Awami League led by Sheikh Hasina.

Syeda Zohra Tajuddin was a Bangladesh Awami League politician. She was a leader of the party and served as its president from 1980 to 1981. She was the wife of the first prime minister Tajuddin Ahmad.
