تنزيلا قمبراڻي) is a Pakistani politician who had been a member of the Provincial Assembly of Sindh from August 2018 to August 2023. Qambrani is the first woman of the Sheedi community to become a member of Sindh Assembly. [2]

Political career

Qambrani was elected to the Provincial Assembly of Sindh as a candidate of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), on a reserved seat for women in southern Sindh in the 2018 Pakistani general election. [2]

Personal life

Qambrani hails from the coastal area of Badin. [1] She belongs to the Sheedi community of Sindh, who are of African descent. She made history by becoming the first Sheedi lawmaker to enter any Pakistani legislature. [2] [3] She is a mother of three, and holds a postgraduate degree in computer science from the University of Sindh. [2]

Her father was a lawyer while her mother retired as a school headmistress. [2] According to Qambrani, her great-grandparents had been brought to Sindh from Tanzania a century back, and one of her sisters is married off there. [2] [3] Her rising profile and ascension to politics has been hailed as an "important step" for Pakistan's Sheedi community, which has at times endured systematic prejudice, discrimination and feudalism. General Hosh Muhammad Sheedi Qambrani or Hoshu Sheedi was an Askari unit, and also supreme commander of Sindh's Talpur army led by Mir Sher Muhammad Khan Talpur. Hoshu Sheedi fought against the British forces under Sir Charles James Napier at the Battle of Hyderabad, and was killed during battle in 24 March 1843. Hosh Muhammad belonged to the Soomro community of Sindh, Pakistan. Before his death in the Battle of Hyderabad, he called out the famous slogan:

مرويسون پر سنڌ نه ڏيسون

Marvesoon par Sindh na desoon

(I will die but not give Sindh)

Since Pakistan's independence on 14 August 1947, women have been active participants in parliamentary politics. Their representation remained low in the first and second Constituent Assemblies, however the amendments to the Constitution of Pakistan paved way for their increased participation in the parliament. Besides, the progressive laws helped improve their participation in legislative and executive positions over the years. Since 2002, women politicians have notable representation in the federal as well as provincial assemblies.
