Taonga Bwembya (born 11 June 1995) is a Zambian footballer who plays as a midfielder for Forest Rangers F.C. and the Zambia national team. [1]

Playing career

Club career

Bwembya was instrumental in leading his club to a second place finish in the Zambian Division One in 2014, achieving promotion to the Super League after a nine-year hiatus. [2] He followed this up by leading the club to an impressive fifth place Super League finish in his first season as captain. [3] Ahead of the 2016 season, the star defender turned down offers from several top-flight clubs. [4] That year, the Wanderers saw four different managers lead the team, and they barely avoided relegation. Bwembya attributed their poor play to the "frequent changes that have been made to the technical bench." [5]

After captaining the Wanderers for two years, [2] he joined Zanaco ahead of the 2017 season. [6] His competitive debut with the team came in February, during the first qualifying round of the 2017 CAF Champions League. Bwembya was named Fans' Player of the Match in Zanaco's scoreless first-leg draw against Rwandan champions APR. [7] In the second-leg, he scored the lone goal in Zanaco's 1–0 victory to secure their spot in the next round. [8] This also happened to be his first goal with the club. [9] They defeated Tanzanian club Young Africans after that to qualify for the group stage. On the last matchday of the group stage, with Zanaco needing a single point to advance, Bwembya was sent off during their fixture against Wydad Casablanca. Ten minutes later, Wydad scored, securing their advancement as Zanaco finished third and was eliminated on goal difference. [10] He was named team captain ahead of the 2019 season. [11]

International career

Bwembya was named to the 21-man squad selected to play at the 2015 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations in Senegal, [12] although he made no appearances as Zambia saw a group stage elimination.

He made his senior international debut for Zambia on 26 March 2017 during a friendly against Zimbabwe, playing the entire 90 minutes of the 0–0 draw in Harare. [13] [14]

Dickson Kenneth Makwaza was a Zambian football player and coach. Nicknamed "Barbed-Wire" due to his tenacity in defence, he was one of the most decorated players in Zambian soccer history and was captain of the Zambia national team that made its first ever appearance at the African Cup of Nations tournament in Egypt in 1974. Makwaza also captained Mufulira Wanderers and was voted Zambian footballer of the year in 1973. He later coached Wanderers and several other club sides.

Biggie Mbasela, better known as Gibby Mbasela was a Zambian footballer who played for Kalulushi Modern Stars, Mufulira Wanderers, Nkana Red Devils, 1. FC Union Berlin of Germany and Tunisian champions Esperance. Renowned for his dribbling skills, Mbasela was voted Zambian Footballer of the Year in 1990.

Benjamin Bwalya Jnr was a Zambian footballer and coach. Bwalya was the son of soccer administrator Benjamin Bwalya Snr and the elder brother of celebrated former Zambian player Kalusha Bwalya. The youngest brother Joel Bwalya was also a footballer.

Dick Chama was a Zambian footballer and coach who played as a centre-back. He was Zambia's defensive stalwart from the late '60s to the mid '70s and formed a formidable central defence pairing alongside Dickson Makwaza and was part of Zambia's squad during the country's very first CAN outing in 1974 and made the official CAF team of the tournament. Chama was voted Zambian Sportsman of the Year in 1975 and after retirement, he coached several club sides as well as the national team.

Fighton Simukonda was a Zambian coach and former footballer. A defender, was part of the Nkana Red Devils side of the 1980s, winning five league titles, and he also captained Zambia. The 2019 Zambia Super League is the 58th season of the Zambia Super League, the top-tier football league in Zambia. Due to the transitional calendar of the CAF competitions in 2018–19, the 20 teams in the league will be divided into two groups of ten teams stream A and stream B, one of teams from the north and one of teams from the south, Nkana leading one and Zesco United heading the other. The teams top two with the most points will qualify for the CAF Champions League then the other two will play the CAF Confederations Cup. The League will return to normal for the 2019–20 season. The league is set to kick off on 27 January, A day after the Charity Shield.

The 2019-20 Zambia Super League is the 59th season of the Zambia Super League, the top-tier football league in Zambia. This is the first Super League season that has a new format which conforms with the CAF calendar. The league kicked off on 31 August. Zesco United are the defending champions and KYSA and Kansashi Dynamos are the newly promoted sides into the super league.

Philemon Chisala is a former Zambian footballer who featured for Mufulira Wanderers in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s as a defender or midfielder. He also represented Zambia at the 1989 CECAFA Cup and CAN 1990.

According to records from the RSSSF, there were many association football cup competitions organized in Zambia since 1962, some of which are the Independence Cup, the Zambian Challenge Cup, the Champion of Champions Cup and Zambian Coca-Cola Cup, the latter which began in 2001. These competitions are either inactive or were played no more as of 2009.

Thomas Bwalya was a Zambian footballer who won several trophies with Mufulira Wanderers and is one of the club's most decorated players. Featuring as an attacking midfielder, he played a key role in Wanderers’ dominance in the sixties and seventies and also represented Zambia. He was the younger brother of another Wanderers and Zambia forward Willie Kunda.
