Tapestry Opera is a Canadian opera company located in Toronto, Ontario. According to its website, it is "the only Canadian company solely dedicated to the creation and performance of original Canadian opera". To date, the company has produced 18 full-length world premieres and 160 world premieres of opera shorts. It has been nominated for 61 Dora Mavor Moore Awards and won 20. [1] It is Canada's largest producer of contemporary opera.

The opera was founded in 1979 by Wayne Strongman, who was the company's Artistic Director until 2013, when he resigned after a period of internal strife. [2] He was replaced by Michael Hidetoshi Mori, who is the current Artistic and General Director. [3] In 2009, Strongman was appointed to the Order of Canada for his contribution to Canadian culture. History

Tapestry Opera began as a Madrigal ensemble called The Tapestry Singers. [5] In 1986, it was renamed Tapestry Music Theatre to reflect changes in the company's direction. [5] In 1999, the company was re-branded as Tapestry New Opera Works to reflect its dedication to the creation of contemporary opera, [5] and now operates as Tapestry Opera.

Tapestry has been an influence on the development of opera on an international level. Rather than bringing in musicians and performers as needed and producing operas as one-off productions, Strongman developed a continuous method where artists and musicians are nurtured and introduced to opera while new operas are in the process of being produced. [6]

In 2010, for Toronto's Luminato Festival, [7] Tapestry Opera collaborated with the Gryphon Trio and the Elmer Iseler Singers to record the album Dark Star Requiem, an Oratorio on the history of HIV/AIDS. [8] The album was released in 2016. [9] At the Juno Awards of 2017, the album was nominated as Classical Album of the Year – Vocal or Choral Performance. [10] Its composer, Andrew Staniland, received a nomination for Classical Composition of the Year. In 2022, the company premiered R.U.R.A Torrent of Light by Nicole Lizee and Nicolas Billon, a new opera about artificial intelligence featuring "new technology built by professors and research assistants in the Digital Futures program at OCAD University." Since 2001, the company has been operating in Toronto's history Distillery District. In December 2021, the company was notified by the building's owner that it had to vacate its space by August 2022. [12]

The Juno Award for "Classical Album of the Year" has been awarded since 1994, as recognition each year for the best vocal classical music album in Canada.

Brott Music Festival, presents annual classical, opera, jazz, pops, and children's education concerts in Hamilton, Halton and Niagara regions in Ontario, Canada as well as touring to other music festivals in southern Ontario. The festival was founded by late conductor Boris Brott and has grown into Ontario's only and Canada's largest orchestral music festival. The orchestra in residence is the National Academy Orchestra of Canada, Canada's only professional orchestral training program. It is also home to BrottOpera, a training program for Canadian emerging opera singers. Its current artistic director is Tania Miller.

The Bach-Elgar Choir is a community chorus of long standing in Hamilton, Ontario, currently directed by Alexander Cann. The Choir is composed of accomplished amateur singers from Hamilton and the neighbouring cities of Burlington, Oakville, Mississauga and Simcoe. Notable performances by the ensemble include the North American première of Verdi's Requiem and the Canadian premieres of Górecki's Miserere and Mahler's Symphony No. 2. The choir has performed at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto, The Sanderson Centre in Brantford, and at the Brott Music Festival in Hamilton. The choir makes frequent guest appearances with the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra.

The Elmer Iseler Singers is a professional chamber choir based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Dinuk Wijeratne is a conductor, composer and pianist, living and working in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. His work Two Pop Songs on Antique Poems won both the 2016 Juno Award for Classical Composition of the Year and the 2016 East Coast Music Award for Classical Composition of the Year. His boundary-crossing musical collaborations include ground-breaking combinations of symphony orchestra and tabla, and string quartet and DJ.

The Theatre of Early Music is a choir and Baroque instrumental ensemble based in Montreal, and later in Toronto. It is conducted by Daniel Taylor. The group performs and records early sacred music. One of the group's better known pieces is Stabat Mater.

Nigredo Hotel is a chamber opera in one act composed by Nic Gotham to a libretto by Ann-Marie MacDonald. It premiered on 13 May 1992 at the Tarragon Theatre in Toronto in a production by Tapestry New Opera Works who had commissioned the opera. The production won two Dora Awards and the work was nominated for the Floyd S. Chalmers Canadian Play Award. Subtitled "an operatic thriller", it is set in Room 7 of a run-down hotel which takes its name from the Jungian concept of Nigredo or "dark night of the soul". The story involves an encounter between the beautiful but crazed woman who runs the hotel and a brain surgeon forced to take refuge there after crashing his car.
