Tarbutton Creek is a stream in north central Douglas County in the Ozarks of southern Missouri. [1]
A stream is a body of water with surface water flowing within the bed and banks of a channel. The stream encompasses surface and groundwater fluxes that respond to geological, geomorphological, hydrological and biotic controls.
Douglas County is a county located in the south-central portion of the U.S. state of Missouri. As of the 2010 census, the population was 13,684. The county seat and only incorporated community is Ava. The county was officially organized on October 19, 1857, and is named after U.S. Senator Stephen A. Douglas (D-Illinois) and later Democratic presidential candidate.
The Ozarks, also called the Ozark Mountains or Ozark Plateau, is a physiographic region in the U.S. states of Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and extreme southeastern Kansas. The Ozarks cover a significant portion of northern Arkansas and most of the southern half of Missouri, extending from Interstate 40 in Arkansas to Interstate 70 in central Missouri.
The stream headwaters are just south of County road C-124 west of Missouri Route C. The stream flows south-southwest passing under Missouri Route 76 at Brushyknob where it turns southwest and flows parallel to Route 76 to its confluence with Bryant Creek about two miles north of Vera Cruz. [2]
Route 76 is a highway in the west half of southern Missouri running between U.S. Route 60 and U.S. Route 63 at Willow Springs and the Oklahoma state line near Tiff City where it continues as a county road. It is the most famous road in Branson where it is known as "76 Country Boulevard" and features many of the entertainment theaters for which Branson is famous. The road runs for its entirety through the Missouri Ozarks, and is at times very hilly and curvy.
Brushyknob is an unincorporated community in Douglas County, Missouri, United States. The community is located on Route 76, approximately fourteen miles east of Ava. The old townsite is located along Route 76 on Tarbutton Creek, about 1.5 miles east of Bryant Creek at an elevation of 920 feet. The Brushyknob church and cemetery is on a ridge flat about 3500 feet to the south-southeast and some 200 feet higher in elevation. The historic Brushyknob school is 850 feet south of the church.
In geography, a confluence occurs where two or more flowing bodies of water join together to form a single channel. A confluence can occur in several configurations: at the point where a tributary joins a larger river ; or where two streams meet to become the source of a river of a new name ; or where two separated channels of a river rejoin at the downstream end.
Tarbutton Creek has the name of the local Tarbutton family. [3]
