Tariro Mnangagwa (born 1986) is a Zimbabwean film producer, actress and conservationist. [1] She is known for her role in the 2020 film Gonarezhou The Movie. Her producing credits include Gonarezhou The Movie [2020] and The Story of Nehanda. [2021], having starred in both movies. She is the youngest daughter of current Zimbabwean president Emmerson Mnangagwa and his first wife Jayne Matarise.

Early life

Mnangagwa was born in Harare to President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Jayne Matarise, who died on 31 January 2002 of cervical cancer. Mnangagwa has five older siblings: Farai, Tasiwa, Vimbayi, Tapiwa, and Emmerson Tanaka. She also has three half-siblings from her father's second marriage. [2] Mnangagwa obtained a Diploma in Professional Photography at Cape Town's CityVarsity. She also graduated with an Honours in Sport Management at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology.

Career

After returning to Zimbabwe, Mnangagwa joined with Akashinga, an all-female anti-poaching ranger unit. Then she became a member an all-female anti-poaching combat unit called the International Anti-Poaching Foundation. [3] [4]

Soon after that, she was invited to play in the film Gonarezhou the co-producer of the film, Sydney Taivavashe. [5] The film is produced in conjunction with the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority. [6] In the film Tariro played the role 'Sergeant Onai' as well as produced the film. [7]

Nehanda Charwe Nyakasikana also known as Mbuya Nehanda was a svikiro, or spirit medium of the Zezuru Shona people. She was a medium of Nehanda, a female Shona mhondoro. As one of the spiritual leaders of the Shona, she was one of the leaders of a revolt, the Chimurenga, against the British South Africa Company's colonisation of what is now Zimbabwe led by Cecil John Rhodes in 1889. She was a Hera of the HwataShava Mufakose Dynasty. She and her ally Sekuru Kaguvi were eventually captured and executed by the company on charges of murder. She has been commemorated by Zimbabweans by statues, songs, novels, and poems, and the names of streets and hospitals. The legacy of the medium continued to be linked to the theme of resistance, particularly the guerrilla war that began in 1972. Her name became of increasing importance to the nationalist movements in Zimbabwe.

Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa is a Zimbabwean politician who has served as President of Zimbabwe since 24 November 2017. A member of ZANU–PF and a longtime ally of former President Robert Mugabe, he held a series of cabinet portfolios and was Mugabe's Vice-President until November 2017, when he was dismissed before coming to power in a coup d'état. He secured his first full term as president in the disputed 2018 general election.

The Zimbabwean government claimed to have foiled an alleged coup d'état attempt involving almost 400 soldiers and high-ranking members of the military that would have occurred on June 2 or June 15, 2007. The alleged leaders of the coup, all of whom were arrested, were retired army Captain Albert Matapo, Colonel Ben Ncube, Major General Engelbert Rugeje, and Air Vice Marshal Elson Moyo.
