Taxali Gate is a 2024 Pakistani crime thriller film directed and written by Abu Aleeha. The film was co-produced by Ayesha Omar who starred in it alongside the ensemble lead of Yasir Hussain, Mehar Bano, Nayyar Ejaz and Umer Aalam.

Plot

Set in Taxali Gate, it is the complex narrative of the residents who face betrayal and injustice, and ultimately stand up against the societal norms for their rights against the flawed judicial system.

Production

The film was shot in Lahore's Taxali Gate, [4] and the shooting was wrapped in May 2023. [5] Omar who was the co-producer of the film as well, shared that they wanted to keep the film's details under wraps till the major shoting. [1] Abu Aleeha told a local publication that the film, a combination of dark humour and tragedy with the locales of Heera Mandi, revolves around the investigation and events surrounding a murder. [6]

The official teaser of the film was released on 9 January 2024, [7] and the official trailer was released on 19 January. [8]

Release

The film was theatricality released on 16 February 2024. [4]

A special free of cost screenings for women on the occasion of International Women's Day were held in Karachi's Cinepax Ocean Mall, Islamabad's Cinepax Jinnah Park and Lahore's Cinepax Packages Mall. [9] The full length version of the film titled 'Director's cut' is slated to release in April 2024 on Eid-ul-Fitr day. [10]

Reception

Critical reception

Mohammad Kamran Jawaid of Dawn praised the film for the acting performances of Ayesha Omer, Alyy Khan and Babar Ali but noted the rushed screenplay and some technical flaws in direction. [11] Sara Danial of DAWN Images praised the performances of Omer, Khan and Yasir Hussain, the background score and Aleeha's portrayal of the societal issues, but noted the rough flow of the film. [12] While reviewing for The Express Tribune , Manahil Tahira noted the performances of the lead actors and Eva B's background score but criticised it for its technical flaws. [13]

Yasir Hussain is a Pakistani screenwriter, actor, director, playwright and host from Islamabad best known for his comic roles. He hosted The After Moon Show on Hum TV. He is also known for playing the antagonist in the 2018 social drama Baandi.

The film is a spin-off to 2015 comedy film Karachi Se Lahore and second installment in Karachi Lahore film series. It features an all star cast, including Hussain along with Saba Qamar, Behroze Sabzwari, Abdullah Farhatullah, Mubashir Malik, Atiqa Odho, Rubina Ashraf and Noor ul Hasan. Mehar Bano is a Pakistani actress. She has played the role of Umama in social-drama Daagh for which she received a nomination for Best Actress at Lux Style Awards. She also played the roles of Batool in ARY Digital's Balaa (2018) and Anoushay in Mere Paas Tum Ho (2019).

Kukri, originally titled Javed Iqbal: The Untold Story of A Serial Killer, is a 2023 Pakistani film, that is based on the life of the notorious Pakistani serial killer and sex offender, Javed Iqbal. Directed by Abu Aleeha with a screenplay also by Aleeha, and produced by Javed Ahmed under K K films, the film is based on Javid Iqbal’s trial when he was arrested for committing crimes against 100 boys. The film stars Yasir Hussain in the title role and Ayesha Omar as Zara, a police officer. The title of the film, Kukri, is another name of the notorious serial killer.

Siwaiyaan is a Pakistani telefilm that released on Eid ul Fitr 2022 on ARY Digital. It is directed by Bilal Atif Khan in his directorial debut who also wrote the film. It stars Sonya Hussyn and Yasir Hussain in leading roles.

<i>Quaid-e-Azam Zindabad</i> 2022 Pakistani film by Nabeel Qureshi

Quaid-e-Azam Zindabad is a 2022 Pakistani action comedy film written by Fizza Ali Meerza and Nabeel Qureshi, directed by Nabeel Qureshi, and produced by Mehdi Ali and Fizza Ali Meerza, under the banners of Filmwala Pictures. The film stars Fahad Mustafa, Javed Sheikh and Mahira Khan with Nayyar Ejaz and Mehmood Aslam in an ensemble cast.

Huey Tum Ajnabi is a Pakistani historical romance drama film directed by Kamran Shahid, who produced it and wrote the script also. The film stars Mikaal Zulfiqar, Ayesha Omar and Sadia Khan, with Sohail Ahmed, Samina Peerzada, Alyy Khan and Mehmood Aslam in the supporting cast. The film was released theatrically on 22 April 2023, on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.

Abu Aleeha is a Pakistani film director and writer. Also known as Ali Sajjad Shah, he started his career as a journalist. He made his directorial debut with the 2019 film, Kataksha and the directed Tevar, Udham Patakh, Kukri, Super Punjabi, Once Upon a Time in Karachi, Shotcut, Sheenogai and Daadal. His latest film, Taxali Gate was released countrywide on 16 February 2024.
