Technology-enhanced active learning

Technology-enhanced active learning, or TEAL, is an alternative method of teaching that MIT pioneered. [1] Led by Professor John Belcher, [2] the TEAL approach showed that it was possible to challenge the passive or recitation style [3] of teaching, common in large classes and re-enforced by lecture halls architecture. Despite having excellent math results, many first-year students had not transitioned across to the way lecturers teach and 40% of students dropped out of first year physics education at MIT. [4] The TEAL approach set out to assist students to "visualize, develop better intuition about, and conceptual models" of scientific concepts. [5]

A situated model for teaching with technology

The TEAL approach, alternately referred to as Studio Physics, [5] eschewed the traditional university lecture, which encouraged passivity. Using a collaborative active learning approach, students would sit in groups of nine around 13 tables, where they were expected to complete problem-solving activities, refer to laptop computers and then project their own solutions on a screen and compare the results with their peers.

History behind TEAL

The TEAL alternative was based on a pedagogical model that was instituted at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute by Jack Wilson in 1994. Since the TEAL approach had a robust assessment component, the implementors were able to understand the students perspective on the learning environment. Class attendance was a key component of the course, and students had to see this as a profitable use of their time.

Current Use and Future Directions

In 2014 TEAL+x, emerged, a combination between the TEAL format with MITx. [6] The TEAL approach is currently in use at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, North Carolina State University, University of Colorado, Harvard University, and the University of Maryland. [7] The biggest lesson from this model is that robust assessment effort need to accompany educational innovations right from the start, and that all academics need to be inducted into the methodology. [8]

A teaching method is a set of principles and methods used by teachers to enable student learning. These strategies are determined partly by the subject matter to be taught, partly by the relative expertise of the learners, and partly by constraints caused by the learning environment. For a particular teaching method to be appropriate and efficient it has to take into account the learner, the nature of the subject matter, and the type of learning it is supposed to bring about.

Active learning is "a method of learning in which students are actively or experientially involved in the learning process and where there are different levels of active learning, depending on student involvement." Bonwell & Eison (1991) states that "students participate [in active learning] when they are doing something besides passively listening." According to Hanson and Moser (2003) using active teaching techniques in the classroom can create better academic outcomes for students. Scheyvens, Griffin, Jocoy, Liu, & Bradford (2008) further noted that "by utilizing learning strategies that can include small-group work, role-play and simulations, data collection and analysis, active learning is purported to increase student interest and motivation and to build students ‘critical thinking, problem-solving and social skills". In a report from the Association for the Study of Higher Education, authors discuss a variety of methodologies for promoting active learning. They cite literature that indicates students must do more than just listen in order to learn. They must read, write, discuss, and be engaged in solving problems. This process relates to the three learning domains referred to as knowledge, skills and attitudes (KSA). This taxonomy of learning behaviors can be thought of as "the goals of the learning process." In particular, students must engage in such higher-order thinking tasks as analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.

Lecture recording refers to the process of recording and archiving the content of a lecture, conference, or seminar. It consists of hardware and software components that work in synergy to record the audio and visual components of the lecture. It is widely used in universities and higher education in the UK and Australia to provide support for students. 71% of institutions responding to a UCISA survey in 2016 indicated that this technology was available in their institution. Where lecture recording is done at scale, the recording system may be integrated with the timetabling system and the collection of metadata may be automated.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Flipped classroom</span> Instructional strategy and a type of blended learning

A flipped classroom is an instructional strategy and a type of blended learning. It aims to increase student engagement and learning by having pupils complete readings at home, and work on live problem-solving during class time. This pedagogical style moves activities, including those that may have traditionally been considered homework, into the classroom. With a flipped classroom, students watch online lectures, collaborate in online discussions, or carry out research at home, while actively engaging concepts in the classroom with a mentor's guidance.

Dr. Cynthia R. McIntyre is a theoretical physicist and former Senior Vice President at the Council on Competitiveness. Her research focuses on the electronic and optical properties of semiconductor heterostructures. She was the second Black woman to receive a PhD in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

In higher education a microdegree, also microcredentials and microcourse, is a qualification focused upon a specified professional or career discipline and typically comprises one or more sources of accelerated educational experiences. Microdegrees are a single manifestation of Competency Based Education (CBE) which seeks to tie credentialing to specific skills sets. Micro-credentials may be completed on-site, online or in a blended format.

The term learning environment can refer to an educational approach, cultural context, or physical setting in which teaching and learning occur. The term is commonly used as a more definitive alternative to "classroom", but it typically refers to the context of educational philosophy or knowledge experienced by the student and may also encompass a variety of learning cultures—its presiding ethos and characteristics, how individuals interact, governing structures, and philosophy. In a societal sense, learning environment may refer to the culture of the population it serves and of their location. Learning environments are highly diverse in use, learning styles, organization, and educational institution. The culture and context of a place or organization includes such factors as a way of thinking, behaving, or working, also known as organizational culture. For a learning environment such as an educational institution, it also includes such factors as operational characteristics of the instructors, instructional group, or institution; the philosophy or knowledge experienced by the student and may also encompass a variety of learning cultures—its presiding ethos and characteristics, how individuals interact, governing structures, and philosophy in learning styles and pedagogies used; and the societal culture of where the learning is occurring. Although physical environments do not determine educational activities, there is evidence of a relationship between school settings and the activities that take place there.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Learning space</span> Physical setting for a learning environment

Learning space or learning setting refers to a physical setting for a learning environment, a place in which teaching and learning occur. The term is commonly used as a more definitive alternative to "classroom," but it may also refer to an indoor or outdoor location, either actual or virtual. Learning spaces are highly diverse in use, configuration, location, and educational institution. They support a variety of pedagogies, including quiet study, passive or active learning, kinesthetic or physical learning, vocational learning, experiential learning, and others. As the design of a learning space impacts the learning process, it is deemed important to design a learning space with the learning process in mind.
