The Tehran Jewish Committee, formally registered in 1934, is an umbrella group of Jewish organizations that work on behalf of the Iranian Jews in Iran. [1] [2]

History

Tehran Jewish Committee started in 1270 A.H. from a group of Jewish leaders in Tehran. It started with the name "Hebra" which is Hebrew for committee, then changed to "Committee of Jewish school" (Bet Sefer) and in 1317 A.H. it changed its name to "Tehran Jewish Committee". One year later it officially registered. The first board included : Loghman Neoharai, Enayatollah Montakhab, Abdullah Golshan, Morteza Moallem, Zia Nehourai, Aziz Elghanian, Yehouda Harounian, Eshagh Barukhim, Rohallah Ben Rouhi, Lalezar Safani, Effeni Famili. Activities

Taking care of 25 synagogues, Kheirkhah hospital in Oudlajan (historic Jewish neighborhood), Jewish elderly care, Jewish cemetery in Khorasan Road, Kosher slaughterhouse, Bakery for Pesach holiday in Tehran no road and many schools and sports centers are among the activities of the Tehran Jewish Committee. In addition, Tehran Jewish Committee has created a Jewish legal authority which rules on Jewish matters.

Current status

Rahmatollah Raffi is the present chairman of the board of the Tehran Jewish Committee preceded by Siamak Moreh Sedgh who is currently the Jewish Representative to the Iranian Senate. Dr. Moresadegh was preceded by Haroun Yashayaei. [4] [5] On January 26, 2007, Yashayaei's letter to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad concerning his Holocaust denial comments brought about worldwide media attention. [6] [7] [8] The Dr. Sapir Hospital and Charity Center is funded through the Tehran Jewish Committee. [9] It is a charity hospital catering to hundreds of patients in need regardless of their faith or religious affiliation.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was President of Iran from 3 August 2005 to 3 August 2013, and during that time had repeatedly made contentious speeches and statements against Israel. Ahmadinejad refused to call Israel by name, instead calling it the “Zionist regime”. He has called for the "elimination of the Zionist regime". Ahmadinejad took part in a protest called "The World Without Zionism" and has derided Israel on numerous occasions. He has urged regional powers to cut diplomatic and economic ties with Israel and halt oil sales. Tensions have risen over Iran's nuclear program. He has also provided funding, training and arms to Hezbollah and Hamas.

Maurice Motamed or Morris Motamed is an Iranian politician who was elected in 2000 and again in 2004 as a Jewish member of the Iranian Parliament, representing the Jewish community which has by Iran's constitution retained a reserved seat since the Persian Constitution of 1906.

The history of the Jews in Iran dates back to late biblical times. The biblical books of Chronicles, Isaiah, Daniel, Ezra, Nehemiah, contain references to the life and experiences of Jews in Persia. In the book of Ezra, the Persian kings are credited with permitting and enabling the Jews to return to Jerusalem and rebuild their Temple; its reconstruction was carried out "according to the decree of Cyrus, and Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia". This event in Jewish history took place in the late 6th century BCE, by which time there was a well-established and influential Jewish community in Persia.

He was known for his hardline views and nuclearisation of Iran. He was also the main political leader of the Alliance of Builders of Islamic Iran, a coalition of conservative political groups in the country, and served as mayor of Tehran from 2003 to 2005, reversing many of his predecessor's reforms.

The International Conference to Review the Global Vision of the Holocaust was a two-day conference in Tehran, Iran that opened on 11 December 2006. Iranian foreign minister Manouchehr Mottaki said the conference sought "neither to deny nor prove the Holocaust... [but] to provide an appropriate scientific atmosphere for scholars to offer their opinions in freedom about a historical issue". Participants included David Duke, Moshe Aryeh Friedman, Robert Faurisson, Fredrick Töben, Michèle Renouf, Ahmed Rami and Yisroel Dovid Weiss of Neturei Karta.

Siyamak More Sedgh is a Jewish Iranian politician and doctor who was the holder of the Iranian Parliament's reserved seat for the Jewish minority from 2008 to 2020, and is also the chairman of the Jewish charitable institution Dr. Sapir Hospital and Charity Center. He has been referred to as Iran's "No. 1 Jew."

The Dr. Sapir Hospital and Charity Center, a Jewish charity hospital in Tehran, founded by Yaghoub Massaband, is the largest charity among the religious minorities in Iran. Over 75 years old, the hospital is under the leadership of Siamak Moreh Sedgh. The Tehran Jewish Committee assist in the financial maintenance of the complex, which is owned by the Tehran Jewish Committee. In 2007, The Christian Science Monitor reported that one cause for the recent co-existence between Jews and Muslims in Tehran, "has been gratitude for the Dr. Sapir Hospital."

The Molla Hanina Synagogue or Mollah Haninah Synagogue, is a Jewish congregation and synagogue, located at 7 Sarjonbak Alley, in the Old Jewish Quarter, in the Oudlajan neighborhood of Tehran, Iran. Established in the late 19th century, it is one of the oldest and, located on a 127 m2 (1,370 sq ft) site, one of the smallest synagogues in Tehran.
