Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda (born 1982) is the Current Attorney General of the Republic of Malawi. [1] [2] Before assuming the Attorney General's office,he worked at Malawi's central bank,the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) as Manager of Ethics and Compliance Division and as In-house Legal Counsel. [3] [4]
In 2001,Nyirenda joined the University of Malawi at Chancellor College where he was enrolled to study Bachelor of Arts in Humanities (BAH) Degree. One year after studying for BAH he crossed to the Faculty of Law at the same Chancellor College where he graduated with Bachelor of Laws Degree (LLB) (Hons) in 2006. [5] In 2018,he went for Master of Laws Degree (LLM) in International Financial Law at University of Sussex in United Kingdom. [4]
Nyirenda has worked as a Senior Legal Aid Advocate from 2006 to 2008 at Legal Aid Department. [6] He then joined the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs in August 2008 as a Senior State Advocate where he worked as government lawyer in both criminal and civil suits. He was employed at the Reserve Bank of Malawi as an in-house Legal Counsel from July 2010. [7] [8] [9] On 27 August 2021,the President of the Republic of Malawi Lazarus Chakwera appointed Nyirenda as the Attorney General replacing Chikosa Silungwe who was fired on 21 July 2021. [10]
Politics of Malawi takes place in a framework of a presidential representative democratic republic,whereby the President of Malawi is both head of state and head of government,and of a multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and the National Assembly. There is a cabinet of Malawi that is appointed by the President of Malawi. The judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature.
Malawi elects on the national level a head of state and government –the President –and a national assembly. The President and members of the National Assembly,elected simultaneously at a General Election,together form the Malawian Parliament owing to the President's role as both head of government and head of state. In practice however,the National Assembly is on par with the executive and is able to exercise oversight functions through investigations and public hearings on various matters including those involving the executive.
The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) is a political party in Malawi. It was formed as a successor party to the banned Nyasaland African Congress when the country,then known as Nyasaland,was under British rule. The MCP,under Hastings Banda,presided over Malawian independence in 1964,and from 1966 to 1993 was the only legal party in the country. It has continued to be a major force in the country since losing power.
John Zenus Ungapake Tembo was a Malawian politician who served for years as President of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP). Tembo comes from the Dedza District in central Malawi,and he was a teacher by profession. Beginning in the 1960s he was an important politician in Malawi,and he was a key figure in the regime of Hastings Banda (1964–1994). He has been variously described as "physically slight,ascetic,fastidious" and "cunning". He was replaced as President of the MCP in August 2013.

Vera Kamtukule is a Malawian author,writer,publisher,activist and politician,who holds a ministerial position in the Cabinet of Malawi. Vera Kamtukule was appointed Minister of Tourism on 31 January 2023. Until her current appointment Vera served as the Minister of Labour since 26 January 2022 and as deputy Minister of Labour following the 2020 Malawian presidential election. In 2021 Vera Kamtukule assumed her role as Chair of the SADC Employment and Labour Sector.
