Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda SC (born 1982) is the 20th and incumbent Attorney General of the Republic of Malawi ) is the current Attorney General of the Republic of Malawi. [1] [2] In his capacity as the Attorney General,he also holds several ex officio positions,including as head of the Malawi Bar and chairperson of the Malawi Council for Legal Education,whose role at the latter institution is to oversee standards of legal training and professional development within the Republic. Prior to this appointment as the Attorney General,Nyirenda served as an in-house legal counsel and manager of Ethics and Compliance division of the Reserve Bank of Malawi [3] [4] where he played a key role in strengthening legal and regulatory frameworks for financial integrity and institutional accountability.
In 2001,Nyirenda joined the then constituent college of he University of Malawi, the Chancellor College where he was initially enrolled to study Bachelor of Arts in Humanities (BAH) Degree. One year after studying for BAH,he crossed to the Faculty of Law at the same institution where he graduated with Bachelor of Laws Degree (LLB) (Hons) in 2006. [5] In 2018,he went for Master of Laws Degree (LLM) in International Financial Law at University of Sussex in United Kingdom. [4] During his university studies,Mr. Nyirenda actively participated in various extracurricular and leadership initiatives,both locally and internationally. While at Chancellor College,University of Malawi,he served as Director of Publications,Information,and Publicity for the Students’Union. Later,during his postgraduate studies at the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom,he was elected as the Black Students’Representative within the National Union of Students (NUS) [6] [7] [8] . In this capacity,he advocated for the interests of students of African,Arab,Asian,and Caribbean heritage,engaging with institutional leadership on issues of equity,inclusion,and representation across higher education institutions in the UK.
Senior Counsel Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda has worked as a Senior Legal Aid Advocate from 2006 to 2008 at Legal Aid Department. [9] He then joined the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs in August 2008 as a Senior State Advocate where he worked as government lawyer in both criminal and civil suits. He was employed at the Reserve Bank of Malawi as an in-house Legal Counsel from July 2010. [10] [11] [12] On 27 August 2021,the President of the Republic of Malawi Lazarus Chakwera appointed Nyirenda as the Attorney General replacing Mr. Chikosa Silungwe. [13] As Attorney General,Nyirenda SC has made a profound and enduring contribution to the development of Malawian jurisprudence. His role in shaping legal frameworks—particularly in complex areas such as financial regulation,central banking law,and sovereign debt—has not only advanced national legal standards but also enhanced Malawi’s standing in regional and international legal circles. In recognition of his notable leadership and specialised expertise—particularly in the domains of public law,commercial law,financial regulation,and central banking—Mr. Thabo Chakaka-Nyirenda was conferred the esteemed rank of Senior Counsel (SC) [14] ,the Malawian equivalent of King’s Counsel (KC),on 4th July 2025. The appointment was made by the President of the Republic of Malawi,His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera,and marks a historic milestone:Mr. Nyirenda became the youngest individual ever to attain this prestigious designation in the legal history of Malawi.
His elevation to Senior Counsel not only affirms his personal merit and exceptional contributions to the legal profession but also reflects the State’s recognition of legal excellence grounded in practical mastery,institutional integrity,and an unwavering commitment to public service. It stands as a testament to the evolving standards of professional honour,celebrating those who embody both intellectual distinction and national service.
Mr. Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda is married to Thokozire Jere with who he has two children.
