Thandel is an upcoming Indian Telugu language action film written and directed by Chandoo Mondeti. [1] It was produced by Bunny Vasu under Geetha Arts and presented by Allu Aravind, it stars Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi in lead roles. Thandel set to release theatrically on 7 February 2025. [2]

Plot

The plot of Thandel revolves around rugged experiences of fishermen from Srikakulam who found themselves accidentally drifting into Pakistani waters during a routine fishing trip. The narrative explores themes of love, revenge, courage and patriotism, weaving together action, drama, and emotion to captivate the audience . [3]

Production

The budget of the movie Thandel is 75 crores It is the most expensive project in Naga Chaitanya's career. A dance sequence on Lord siva in the film itself is made with a budget of 4 crores [4] where 900 specially trained dancers [5] worked for the song. [6] The makers have already recovered 40 crores from digital rights. [7]

Filming

The filming of Thandel started in December 2023 with the lead cast Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi. The duo earlier acted in 2021 telugu film Love Story. The major part of the shooting is done in Vizag [8] , Srikakulam and Udupi. [9]

Release

Initially the movie was planned for a Sankranthi festival release in January 2025. Due to some difficulties in shooting permissions and also for uncompromised quality of making, the makers have opted for 7 February 2025 in Tamil and Hindi languages. [10] [11] [12] [13] The satellite rights were sold to Zee [14] and the post release OTT rights were sold to Netflix for a huge price [15]

Chandoo Mondeti is an Indian film director and screenwriter who works in Telugu cinema. He has directed films like Karthikeya (2014), Premam (2016), Bloody Mary (2022). For his work on Karthikeya, he was nominated for Best Director – Telugu at the 62nd Filmfare Awards South and the 1st IIFA Utsavam. He fetched the Best Feature Film in Telugu for Karthikeya 2 at the 70th National Film Awards.

The film stars Sivakarthikeyan as Major Mukund Varadarajan, alongside Sai Pallavi, Rahul Bose and Bhuvan Arora. It is an adaptation of the book series India's Most Fearless: True Stories of Modern Military Heroes by Shiv Aroor and Rahul Singh, which contains a segment based on Mukund. The film follows Indhu Rebecca Varghese, Mukund's wife, who narrates the life of the Major on her way to New Delhi to receive the Ashoka Chakra, which was awarded posthumously to Mukund.
