Thapelo Tsheole is a Botswana executive and entrepreneur. He is the chief executive officer of the Botswana Stock Exchange, [1] [2] chairman of Committee of SADC Stock Exchanges [3] [4] and president of the African Securities Exchanges. [5] [6] [7]

Background

Tsheole was born in Mochudi, Botswana. He attained a Bachelor of Social Sciences from the University of Botswana and a Master of Commerce in Financial Markets from Rhodes University in South Africa. He also holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration from the Graduate School of Business at University of Cape Town and he also studied several financial markets programmes including a Leadership Development Programme at the University of Stellenbosch Business School. Tsheole began his career in 2003 when he joined the Bank of Botswana as a Dealer in Forex and Money Markets and left in 2007 to join Botswana Stock Exchange where he started as Product Development Manager up to 2014. [11] [12]

Tsheole was appointed deputy CEO of the Botswana Stock Exchange Limited in 2014 then in January 2016 he was appointed CEO. [13] In 2017 he joined the Africa Integrated Reporting Committee, a joint initiative between Pan African Federation of Accountants and World Bank. [14] [15]

In 2020, Tsheole was appointed vice president [16] [17] of the African Securities Exchanges Association then he became president in 2022. [18] [19] In 2023 he was appointed Global PSSL as strategic advisor and reviewer for UN Pathways. [20] He is also a member of The Institute of Financial Markets of South Africa and the Institute of Directors in South Africa.

Tsheole introduced the first Exchanged Traded Funds (ETFs) in Botswana history and in September 2018, he was recognised with the Presidential Order of Meritorious Service which was awarded by the President of the Republic of Botswana. [21] [22] [23]

Its functions include the exchange of information and assistance in the development of member exchanges.

The Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE) is a stock exchange located in Gaborone, Botswana. The Botswana share market was established in 1989 and became the Botswana Stock Exchange in 1994. It is governed by the Botswana Stock Exchange Act.

In October 2021, Access Bank Group concluded the acquisition of 78.15 percent shareholding in the stock of the erstwhile BancABC Botswana. The bank subsequently rebranded to its current name to reflect its shareholding. The shares of stock of Access Bank Botswana are traded on the Botswana Stock Exchange, under the symbol: ACCESS. The company shareholding amounting to 21.85 percent that is not controlled by Access Bank Group is free-floating on the BSE.

He was a member of the Executive Committee of the South Asian Federation of Exchanges (SAFE), and the Chairman of the Committee of SADC Stock Exchanges (CoSSE). Benimadhu is also a regular speaker on emerging markets and on African markets in international stock exchange conferences.

Oscar N. Onyema, is the immediate past Group Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Exchange Group Plc, an institution that services the largest economy in Africa and champions the development of Africa’s financial markets. Prior to attaining this position, he was the CEO of The Nigerian Stock Exchange (“NSE”) for 10 years. He has widely been recognized as an agent of change in restoring and growing investors’ confidence and advancing Nigeria’s capital markets towards a path of sustainable growth and development. Onyema is the Chairman of two affiliate companies: Central Securities Clearing System Plc (CSCS), the clearing, settlement, and depository for the Nigerian capital market; and NG Clearing Limited, which is the premier Central Counter Party Clearing House (CCP) in Nigeria. He serves on several other boards and committees domestically and internationally including the Pension Commission of Nigeria (PENCOM), London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) Africa Advisory Group (LAAG), and Membership Committee of the WFE. Choppies Enterprises Limited is a Botswana multinational grocery and general merchandise retailer headquartered in Gaborone, Botswana. The retailer initially sold only food-based goods and other fast-moving consumer goods. The group owns a centralized, in-house distribution network in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Kenya.
