Arlo Davy Guthrie is an American folk singer-songwriter. He is known for singing songs of protest against social injustice, and storytelling while performing songs, following the tradition of his father, Woody Guthrie. Guthrie's best-known work is his debut piece, "Alice's Restaurant Massacree", a satirical talking blues song about 18 minutes in length that has since become a Thanksgiving anthem. His only top-40 hit was a cover of Steve Goodman's "City of New Orleans". His song "Massachusetts" was named the official folk song of the state, in which he has lived most of his adult life. Guthrie has also made several acting appearances. He is the father of four children, who have also had careers as musicians.
Douglas James Kershaw is an American fiddle player, singer and songwriter from Louisiana. Active since 1948, he began his career as part of the duo Rusty and Doug, along with his brother, Rusty Kershaw. He had an extensive solo career that included fifteen albums and singles that charted on the Hot Country Songs charts. He is also a member of the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame, being inducted in 2009.

Mermaid Avenue is a 1998 album of previously unheard lyrics written by American folk singer Woody Guthrie, put to music written and performed by British singer Billy Bragg and the American band Wilco. The project was the first of several such projects organized by Guthrie's daughter, Nora Guthrie, original director of the Woody Guthrie Foundation and archives. Mermaid Avenue was released on the Elektra Records label on June 23, 1998. A second volume of recordings, Mermaid Avenue Vol. II, followed in 2000 and both were collected in a box set alongside volume three in 2012 as Mermaid Avenue: The Complete Sessions. The projects are named after the song "Mermaid's Avenue", written by Guthrie. This was also the name of the street in Coney Island, New York, on which Guthrie lived. According to American Songwriter Magazine, "The Mermaid Avenue project is essential for showing that Woody Guthrie could illuminate what was going on inside of him as well as he could detail the plight of his fellow man". It was voted number 939 in Colin Larkin's All Time Top 1000 Albums 3rd Edition (2000).

Guthrie and Irion were married on October 16, 1999, and began performing together as an acoustic duo in late 2000, performing together until they divorced in the mid-2010s. Their music combined Irion's love of rock and blues with Guthrie's roots of folk and country.
Contemporary folk music refers to a wide variety of genres that emerged in the mid 20th century and afterwards which were associated with traditional folk music. Starting in the mid-20th century, a new form of popular folk music evolved from traditional folk music. This process and period is called the (second) folk revival and reached a zenith in the 1960s. The most common name for this new form of music is also "folk music", but is often called "contemporary folk music" or "folk revival music" to make the distinction. The transition was somewhat centered in the United States and is also called the American folk music revival. Fusion genres such as folk rock and others also evolved within this phenomenon. While contemporary folk music is a genre generally distinct from traditional folk music, it often shares the same English name, performers and venues as traditional folk music; even individual songs may be a blend of the two.

Cold Creek County is a Canadian country rock group based in Brighton, Ontario. Its members are Doug Oliver, Josh Lester, Trevor MacLeod, Justin Lester, and Jordan Honsinger. They were founded in 2013 and signed to Sony Music Canada in 2014.
River Town Saints is a Canadian country music group from Arnprior, Ontario, composed of Chris McComb, Jeremy Bortot, Jordan Potvin, Chase Kasner, and Joey Patrois. Labelle, McComb and Bortot formed the trio Labelle in 2014, later adding Potvin and Daniel DiGiacomo and changing their name to River Town Saints. On February 21, 2019, DiGiacomo died unexpectedly at the age of 31. Afterwards, the band added Chase Kasner. Patrois initially filled in on bass before joining the band officially a short while later. The group began playing shows around their hometown in 2014. They signed to Open Road Recordings in July 2015 and released their debut single, "A Little Bit Goes a Long Way", in November of that same year. The song debuted on the Billboard Canada Country chart in January 2016, eventually peaking at #31. A music video, filmed in Ottawa, premiered on CMT the following month. Their follow up single, "Cherry Bomb", released May 6 of 2016, saw greater success, peaking at #24 on the Billboard Canadian Country Charts. The band released their third single "Bonfire" in January 2017, and it was their first song to debut on the Canadian Country Top 40, coming in at #39 its first week on radio. It went on to become the band's first Top 10 hit in April 2017, peaking at #9.
