The Aided High School is one of the oldest secondary schools in the Sylhet region of Bangladesh, having been established in 1928. Economist Saifur Rahman was one of the notable students of the school. It is situated in the Zindabazar neighbourhood, in the center of Sylhet. Sylhet Government Alia Madrasa is located in Chawhatta, Sylhet, Bangladesh. Founded in 1913, the madrasa currently has more than 650 students and 18 staff. Ajmal Ali Choudhury was a Pakistani politician and former Minister of Commerce of Pakistan. He was also a member of the 4th National Assembly of Pakistan. His close relationship with Muhammad Ali Jinnah and contributions during the 1947 Sylhet referendum led to him being known as the Sylhet's Quaid by his supporters. However, he became heavily criticised after supporting Pakistan during the Bangladesh Liberation War.
ʿAbdul Jalil Choudhury Badarpuri was a Bengali Deobandi Islamic scholar, teacher and politician. Born in what is now Bangladesh, Choudhury became one of the senior disciples of Hussain Ahmed Madani from Sylhet District. He relocated to Badarpur, Karimganj following the Partition of Bengal in 1947 and served as a member of the Assam Legislative Assembly for several terms. Choudhury has many contributions in Northeast India, covering Islamic and social development, and had participated in the Bengali Language Movement of the Barak Valley.
Abdul Hamid, popularly known as Minister Abdul Hamid, was a Bengali lawyer, educationist and politician. He was a former president and education minister of the Assam Legislative Council. From 1947 to 1954, he served as the education minister of East Bengal.
