The Black Hole is a community center located in the G 11/3 area of Islamabad, Pakistan. [1] It is a "non-profit, open-to-all educational and intellectual space" with a view to promoting science, art and culture in Pakistan. [2] A project of Mashal Books, it was launched on 5 March 2022 [3] with a goal to help all citizens of Pakistan "participate fully in the scientific, [4] social, economic and cultural life of their society". [5]

Contents

Throughout the week, live-streamed lectures, discussions [6] and events [7] promoting culture are held in its 60-capacity auditorium. A small library and a science lab specifically designed for children is also one of its key features. [8] The lectures cover a range of topics from hardcore science to socioeconomic ills in the Pakistani society. The main objective of the science lectures is to explain the concepts of "high-science and high-technology in simple Urdu and English". [2] [5]

Launch

It was launched on 5 March 2022 as a project of Mashal Books, a non-profit publishing house in Pakistan with a view to translating and publishing high quality books on society and culture from English into Urdu. [9] Pervez Hoodbhoy, a well-known Pakistani nuclear physicist and academic who has also headed Mashal Books since 1989, was one of the key figures behind the center's [10] establishment. [11]

Police Raid

On Tuesday, October 24, 2023, a team of Islamabad Police led by SHO Alamgir Khan of Ramana Police Station raided The Black Hole and forcibly stopped a discussion titled The Unseen Crisis: Afghan Refugees Facing Deportation on forced deportation of Afghan Refugees. [12] [13] Former senator and eminent Politician and human rights activist Afrasiab Khattak, and Afghan community representative, Haji Raz Muhammad was to take part and journalist Sajjad Azhar was to moderate the discussion. [14] [15]

The people attending the discussion said that the police came inside the auditorium and stopped the panelists from starting the discussion. Khattak told that the police took the panelists aside, keeping the discussion on hold for at least two hours. [16] Pervez Hoodbhoy told local news agencies that the policemen locked up The Black Hole's operations manager and confiscated his phone. He also told that some of the policemen manhandled staff. [14] One of the staff members was punched by a policeman and thrown into a police van. [13]

The police withdrew only when some news reporters arrived with cameras. [12] According to Dissent Today, the SSP reportedly warned a high-ranking member of The Black Hole of 'dire consequences' before leaving. [14] [12] The SHO later denied the raid, saying that the police had come there on deputy commissioner's orders and only demanded an NOC (no objection certificate) as Section 144 of the CrPC was imposed on the city by the city administration. [17] [12] Afrasiab Khattak said that on asking a magistrate whether Section 144 was applicable to a private meeting, he couldn't provide any answers. [16]

Pervez Amirali Hoodbhoy is a Pakistani nuclear physicist, author, media commentator, and social activist. He is generally considered one of the most vocal, progressive and liberal members of the Pakistani intelligentsia. Hoodbhoy is known for his opposition to nuclear weapons and vocal defence of secularism, freedom of speech, scientific temper and education in Pakistan. Some senior journalists, political and army figures have leveled accusations of treason and unbelief against him but he has rebutted them. Instead he regards himself as a global citizen. His physics-math course lectures, as well as on popular science topics, are widely watched and available online.

Pakistan studies curriculum is the name of a curriculum of academic research and study that encompasses the culture, demographics, geography, history, International Relations and politics of Pakistan. Abdul Hameed Nayyar, also known as A.H. Nayyar, is a Pakistani physicist, author, and a freelance consultant on the issues of education, nuclear safety, and energy. His field of specialization is in the physics of condensed matter, and served in the faculties of the Quaid-e-Azam University in Islamabad from 1973 till 2005 and the Lahore University of Management Sciences. Nayyar is known for voicing for education reforms and military arms control, which he directed research programs at the Sustainable Development Policy Institute in Islamabad. He is also one of the founding members of The Black Hole, an intellectual space in Islamabad, Pakistan.

Pervez Khan Khattak is a Pakistani politician who served as the Minister of Defence from August 2018 until April 2022. He had been a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan from August 2018 till January 2023. Prior to that, he served as the 22nd Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from 2013 to 2018, elected to the Provincial Assembly from Nowshera District. He was a senior member of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf until July 2023, when he formed his breakaway faction, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Parliamentarians (PTI-P). Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Parliamentarians is a political party in Pakistan. It was founded on 17 July 2023 by the former Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pervez Khattak. The party was formed as a reaction to the 2023 Pakistani protests by breaking away from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.

In October 2023, the government of Pakistan announced a plan to deport foreign nationals who either do not have valid visas or have overstayed their visa for more than one year. The mass deportations affect primarily Afghans who fled to Pakistan after Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan. There were 3.8 million Afghans in Pakistan at the time the deportation order was announced. Afghans accounted for 95% of the foreign nationals in Pakistan. Deportations were to start from 1 November 2023. An estimated 200,000 Afghans had left Pakistan by then.
