The Cape May was a Canadian musical act from Calgary, Alberta. The band's songs are centred on the poetic lyrics of vocalist Clinton St. John, which tell moody stories of urban dystopia and a culture on the brink. [1]
The Cape May was formed in 2003 by Clinton St. John (vocals, guitars) and Jeff MacLeod (drums, guitars, keys, backing vocals). The band released their first album Central City May Rise Again on Flemish Eye in 2005; Jeff Deringer also contributed guitar to the album. [2] The band embarked on a North American tour to support Central City May Rise Again after their record reached number 1 on the Canadian College music charts. [3]
The band's lineup was later rounded out by multi-instrumentalist Matt Flegel. In 2006 they were invited by Nina Nastasia to be her backing band on tour across the US and Europe, opening on many of the dates. That year they released their second album, Glass Mountain Roads , with the help of engineer Steve Albini. [1] [4]
St John began to release his own music in 2007 and released his last album in 2014. [5] Clinton St. John and Jeff Macleod reunited in 2020 to form the band Florida BC and released their debut album Salt Breaker Sand with the help from local musicians Morgan Greenwood (of Azeda Booth and Baths) and Carl Davison (Hook and Eye). Matt Flegel went on to form the band Women and then Viet Cong; the name proved to be too controversial and is now called Preoccupations. [6]
Jeff MacLeod collaborated with Nina Nastasia to form Jolie Laide, who released their self-titled album in 2023. [7] [8]

Matt Bissonette is an American bass player and vocalist. According to Guitar 9, an online musicianship magazine, he has played bass and other stringed instruments on at least 22 albums, with music styles ranging from jazz, jazz fusion, progressive metal and instrumental rock. Bissonette has played bass with performers such as David Lee Roth (1987–1992), Jeff Lynne and ELO (2001), Ringo Starr (2003–2005), Elton John (2012–2023), and currently REO Speedwagon ). He is the brother of drummer Gregg Bissonette.
Nina Maria Nastasia is an American folk singer-songwriter. A native of Los Angeles, she first came to prominence in New York City in 2000 after Radio 1 disc jockey John Peel began giving her debut album, Dogs, airplay. The album earned Nastasia a cult following, and was re-released in 2004. Her fifth studio album release, You Follow Me (2007), was a collaboration with Australian drummer Jim White of Dirty Three.

Women was a Canadian indie rock band formed in Calgary in 2008. The group consisted of Patrick Flegel, Christopher Reimer, Matt Flegel and Mike Wallace. Their debut album Women was released on Chad VanGaalen's label Flemish Eye on July 8, 2008 in Canada and on Jagjaguwar in the United States on October 7, 2008. It was rumoured that the band broke up on October 29, 2010, after a fight on stage at a show at Lucky Bar in Victoria, although their management stated that they had merely cancelled the rest of their tour.

The album was recorded in four days at Steve Albini's Electrical Audio studio in Chicago. Los Angeles–based arranger Paul Bryan conducted score for a small orchestra, with Nastasia and her manager Kennan Gudjonsson assembling string and woodwind quartets. The record also features contributions from drummer Jay Bellerose and guitarist Jeff Parker.

The band consists of Matt Flegel, Scott Munro, Daniel Christiansen (guitar) and Mike Wallace (drums). Flegel and Wallace had previously been members of the band Women, which broke up in 2010. The group's musical style has been described as "labyrinthine post-punk".
