The Cycles of Trying to Cope is the sixth studio album by American metalcore band Like Moths to Flames. It was released on May 10, 2024, through UNFD. The album was produced by Carson Slovak and Grant McFarland. It is the band's first album to feature drummer Roman Garcia and guitarist Cody Cavanaugh. [1] [2] [3]
On February 7, 2024, the band released two new singles "Paradigm Trigger" and "Angels Weep" with a corresponding music video for "Paradigm Trigger". [4] On March 7, the band unveiled the third single "Kintsugi" along with a music video. At the same time, they announced the album itself and the release date, while also revealing the album cover and the track list. [5] On April 11, the band premiered the fourth single "Dissociative Being". [6]

The album received positive reviews from critics. Anne Erickson from Blabbermouth.net gave the album 8 out of 10 and said: "Like Moths to Flames are absolutely triumphant on The Cycles of Trying to Cope, and it should be well-received by new and old fans alike. Next time around, it would be nice to see this band dip into more experimentation, as they certainly have the talent to branch out. But, for now, The Cycles of Trying to Cope is more than worthy of repeat listens." [7] Katie Bird of Distorted Sound scored the album 8 out of 10 and said: "Overall, The Cycles of Trying to Cope is cohesive, fun to listen to, and accessible to new fans. Whilst it isn't perfect, as some of the songs in the middle suffer from production issues, the rest of the album is a masterclass in how to balance two genres at once. By scattering elements of electronica throughout the first three songs, for example, it does not feel out of place for the fourth song to have a heavy electronic metal sound. By doing this throughout the album, the band make sure that the genre changes do not sound sudden. The instruments and vocals throughout are fantastic, and the pacing is – mostly – cohesive, and all told this makes for a brilliant addition to the band's discography." [8]
New Transcendence praised the album saying, "I was astounded, and continue to be astounded at The Cycles of Trying to Cope. A record I expected to enjoy I've ended up loving, and while there may be one or two songs that fall just flat of the heights set by "Kintsugi", "Gone Without a Trace" and "What Do We See When We Leave This Place?" They are by no means slouches. Like Moths to Flames' sixth full-length record is their finest, and a contender for one of 2024's apex metalcore records with precious little in the way of tangible flaws. It remains to be seen how Like Moths to Flames come to terms with trying to cope, but I can only hope they have cycles of churning out more records like this long into the future." [9] Samantha Andujar from Spill gave the album almost a perfect score 4.5/5 and saying: "The Cycles of Trying to Cope addresses these issues by bringing together these complex emotions and various musical threads to create not just one of their finest records to date, but also a fantastic concept album." Melodic metalcore is a fusion genre, incorporating elements of melodic death metal and metalcore; it has a heavy emphasis on melodic instrumentation, distorted guitar tones, palm muting, double bass drumming, blast beats, metalcore-stylized breakdowns, and vocals that range from aggressive screaming and death growls to clean singing. The genre has seen commercial success for employing a more accessible sound at times compared to other forms of extreme music. Many notable melodic metalcore bands have been influenced by At the Gates and In Flames.
Emarosa is an American rock band formed in Lexington, Kentucky, in 2006. The band currently consists of lead guitarist and founding member ER White and lead vocalist Bradley Walden, who joined the band in 2013. The group has undergone several line-up changes throughout its career, with lead guitarist ER White being the sole remaining founding member. Originally oriented towards post-hardcore and alternative rock, Emarosa has gravitated towards a more pop rock sound in recent years.
The Amity Affliction is an Australian post-hardcore band from Gympie, Queensland, formed in 2003. The band's current line-up consists of Joel Birch, Ahren Stringer, Dan Brown (guitar) and Joe Longobardi (drums). The Amity Affliction has released eight studio albums including Severed Ties (2008), Youngbloods (2010), Chasing Ghosts (2012), Let the Ocean Take Me (2014), This Could Be Heartbreak (2016), Misery (2018) and Everyone Loves You... Once You Leave Them (2020). They are known for their highly personal songs, often dealing with depression, anxiety, death, substance abuse, and suicide, many lyrics stemming from vocalist Joel Birch's past struggles. The Amity Affliction released their latest album, Not Without My Ghosts, in 2023.
Kintsugi, also known as kintsukuroi, is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with urushi lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. The method is similar to the maki-e technique. As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise.

The group has had several line-up changes throughout their career, with no founding members remaining. Bury Tomorrow are a British metalcore band formed in 2006 in Southampton, Hampshire, England. The band is composed of six members; lead vocalist Daniel Winter-Bates, bassist Davyd Winter-Bates, drummer Adam Jackson, lead guitarist Kristan Dawson, who replaced founding guitarist Mehdi Vismara in 2013, rhythm guitarist Ed Hartwell, and keyboardist and vocalist Tom Prendergast, who both replaced Jason Cameron in 2021. The band's current line-up consists of lead vocalist Chris Roetter, guitarists Zach Pishney and Cody Cavanaugh, and drummer Roman Garcia. Roetter is the only member of the original line-up that remains in the band.
When We Don't Exist is the debut studio album by American metalcore band Like Moths to Flames. The album was released on November 8, 2011, through Rise Records and was produced by Will Putney. It is the band's first and only release with drummer Lance Greenfield, who left the band in 2012. It is also the last release with another drummer Kevin Rutherford, who performed on two bonus tracks of the deluxe reissue of the album. The album is also the band's first release with lead guitarist Eli Ford. As of 2012, music videos were produced for the songs "You Won't Be Missed", and "The Worst in Me", as well as a live video for "GNF". A reissue of the album was released on November 20, 2012 featuring two new songs.

The band members formed from various bands in the New York City post-hardcore scene, and took their name from the Heroes villain Sylar.
