The Danish Foreign Policy Society(in Danish: Det Udenrigspolitiske Selskab) [1] is a private, non-profit organisation founded in 1946 with the aim of promoting interest and raising awareness on foreign policy and international affairs in Denmark.

His Royal Highness Crown Prince Frederik is the Patron of the Society. A former ambassador Ulrik Federspiel chairs the Board, and the Executive Director Charlotte Flindt Pedersen [2] carries out the daily management of the Society.

The Foreign Policy Society is independent from political as well as commercial interests. The Society does not take a stand on political issues, but merely engages in debates by conveying and sharing information and contacts. The Society has around 1000 personal members and 200 members representing around 50 companies and institutions. The Society has a Youth Branch, DUS-U35, with around 350 members.

Activities

The Danish Foreign Policy Society carries out conferences and debates, organizes study visits, issues publications and produces TV-broadcasts.

The Society invites prominent Danish and foreign speakers, politicians, academics to the debates and conferences. In the course of 70 years, many prominent speakers, including George H. W. Bush, [3] Martti Ahtisaari, [4] Lech Wałęsa, [5] Dalai Lama, [6] Kofi Annan, [7] Carl Bildt [8] and Navi Pillay [9] held speeches at the Foreign Policy Society.

The Society produces the periodical "Foreign''(in Danish: Udenrigs), which is the only one of its kind in Denmark, focusing entirely on international affairs and foreign policy. In addition, the Society produces thematic or country specific Foreign policy essays(in Danish: Udenrigspolitiske Skrifter). Until 2020 it also produced booklets with country facts Countries in your pocket(in Danish: Lande i Lommeformat). In collaboration with the Danish TV-channel dk4 [10] it used to produce the TV-magazine In the Foreign Policy Society [11] as well as the programme Uffe and Mogens discuss the World, starring the two former ministers for foreign affairs, Uffe Ellemann-Jensen and Mogens Lykketoft. The Society also arranges study visits to interesting countries and regions around the world. For instance, in 2016 the study visits were made to the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, the Arctic region and Cuba.

History

The man behind the Foreign Policy Society was Ole Lippmann, [13] a member of the Danish resistance movement. In his mind, foreign policy was a matter far too important to be entrusted only to politicians and government officials. Civil society should participate in the debate on international affairs, whose involvement should take place on an informed and qualified basis.

The Society was established in Copenhagen on 31 October 1946. The founders were well-known men from the resistance movement, including Ole Lippmann, Svend Truelsen, Erik Husfeldt, Ebbe Munck; politicians such as Per Federspiel and Thorkil Kristensen from the Liberal Party, Ole Bjørn Kraft from the Conservative Party, and the communists Ib Nørlund and Peter P. Rohde. Academia was represented by, among others, professors Alf Ross and Hartvig Frisch.

Carl Theodor Zahle, was a Danish lawyer and politician who served as Prime Minister of Denmark from 1909 to 1910 and again from 1913 to 1920. In 1895, he was elected as a member of the lower chamber of the Danish parliament, the Folketing, for the Liberal Party (Venstrereformpartiet). A campaigner for peace, in 1905 he co-founded the Social Liberal Party together with other disgruntled members of Venstrereformpartiet. He continued on as a member of the Folketinget for Det Radikale Venstre until 1928, when he became a member of the upper chamber of parliament (Landsting). In 1929 he became Justice Minister, a post which he held until 1935.

Uffe Ellemann-Jensen was a Danish politician who served as Minister for Foreign Affairs of Denmark in the Conservative-led Poul Schlüter Administration from 1982 to 1993. He was leader of the Danish Liberal Party Venstre from 1984 to 1998 and President of the European Liberals 1995–2000.

Centre for Political Studies, also known as CEPOS, is an independent association which works as a classical liberal/free-market conservative think-tank in Denmark. It is a strongly right-leaning and highly political association.

Rita is a Danish comedy-drama television series created by Christian Torpe for TV 2. It premiered in Denmark on 9 February 2012, and concluded on 20 July 2020, with 40 episodes broadcast over five seasons. Produced by SF Studios, the series was filmed in Rødovre, Zealand, and executive-produced by Keld Reinicke, Karoline Leth, Lars Bjørn Hansen, Birdie Bjerregaard, Christian Rank, Jennifer Green, and Torpe, who also served as head writer. All episodes are available internationally on streaming service Netflix, who partnered with TV 2 to produce the later three seasons, becoming a Netflix Original.

The Robert Honorary Award has been given occasionally since 1986 as one of the Robert Awards by the Danish Film Academy. It is the Danish equivalent of the American Academy Honorary Award.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">The Alternative (Denmark)</span> Political party in Denmark

The Alternative is a green political party in Denmark. The party was publicly launched on 27 November 2013 by former Minister of Culture Uffe Elbæk and Josephine Fock; Elbæk had been a parliamentarian for the Social Liberal Party. Elbæk was the leader of the party until February 2020, where he stepped down and was succeeded by Fock. Currently the party is led by Franciska Rosenkilde. It collaborates with DiEM25 at the European level.

She was a candidate to succeed Uffe Elbæk as leader of the party, after he resigned in February 2020, but lost to Josephine Fock.

Claus Ebbe Bjørn was a Danish author, historian, and television and radio broadcaster, who was Associate Professor of Agricultural History at the University of Copenhagen, Chairman of the Danish Agricultural History Society and Member of the Royal Danish Society of the History of the Fatherland.
