The Display Team are a six-piece independent progressive punk band from South-East London, England. The group has received airplay in the UK on BBC Radio 6 Music [1] and Phoenix FM, [2] along with many shows podcast by DJs on Kooba Radio which is heard worldwide on the Internet.

History

Begun in 2000, the band was known as Mumrah until 2006. The original members were Iain MacKenzie (rhythm guitar), Jimb (guitar), Chuckles the Clown (drums and voice), Greg Cruse (bass) and DJ Implant (voice and turntables). This incarnation was short-lived and Implant and Cruse left the band; Iain MacFrenzy assumed the position of lead vocalist and Nixo (bass) became a full-time member. The band expanded to include Mickey Bones (trombone, voice) and Tiny Tommy Toot-Fruit (Arif Driessen, trumpet and voice, now of UK/US ambient rock band *Shels). Toot Fruit left the band in 2008 to be replaced by T-Cass (trumpet, voice). The line-up at that time consisted of Iain MacFrenzy (rhythm guitar and voice), Chuckles The Clown (drums and voice), Jimb (lead guitar and voice), Oz (bass guitar and voice), Mickey Bones (trombone and voice) and T-Cass (trumpet and voice). [3] [4] This personnel recorded the album, Drones, in mid-2008 which was released on the Genin label - home of Djevara, Elephant Vs Leopard, Thumpermonkey, Claypigeon, Frowser and Pigshakle - on 1 February 2010.

Due to his commitments elsewhere, T-Cass left in early 2010 to play in alt-rock band They Came From Japan, and was replaced by Samwise, formerly of ska-punk band The Lovespuds, at the end of April. In November 2012, Joshing joined the band on guitar and voice, replacing MacFrenzy who had departed in 2011.

In 2014, the band successfully led a crowd-funding campaign to record a new album, entitled "Shifts", which was released in April 2016 on their own label, "Opposing Forces". Produced by the band and Paul "Tip-top, you don't stop, tip 'o the morning to you, day-tipping" Tipler, who also engineered the album, this was the last foray for Ozrick, who subsequently left the band in 2016 and was replaced by Stanley Elvis. Since then, the band has continued to rehearse and write in anticipation for a new release, as well as perform with artists such as Babar Luck, the Perhaps Contraption, and scando-prog allstars Major Parkinson.

Their music borrows from rock, ska, punk, progressive rock, funk, doo-wop, swing, hardcore and metal.

The Display Team's recordings have been played on BBC Radio 6 Music by Tom Robinson [1] along with Phoenix FM [2] and Kooba Radio. [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] [11] With other bands their contribution to the CD compilation Un-Scene 4 was noted by Rock Sound music magazine as deserving of "an honourable mention." [12]

The group tours the UK and throughout Europe [3] and has appeared on the BBC introducing stage at Rhythms of The World festival, [13] Wasted Festival [14] and Big Rivers Festival in the Czech Republic alongside bands such as Mad Caddies. [3] [15] Under their previous moniker Mumrah they played Uxfest in 2004 and 2006.

The Display Team's music has been influenced by "a wide range of pilferable sources, including Frank Zappa, Cardiacs, Mr. Bungle, Queen and a selection of punk and ska bands too numerous (and sometimes obscure) to single out by name." [3] The band themselves also cite Mad Caddies, Madness, Reel Big Fish, Goldfinger, The Specials and The Beach Boys. [16]

Ska is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1950s and was the precursor to rocksteady and reggae. It combined elements of Caribbean mento and calypso with American jazz and rhythm and blues. Ska is characterized by a walking bass line accented with rhythms on the off beat. It was developed in Jamaica in the 1960s when Stranger Cole, Prince Buster, Clement "Coxsone" Dodd, and Duke Reid formed sound systems to play American rhythm and blues and then began recording their own songs. The Specials, also known as The Special AKA, were an English 2 tone and ska revival band formed in 1977 in Coventry. After some early changes, the first stable lineup of the group consisted of Terry Hall and Neville Staple on vocals, Jerry Dammers on keyboards, Lynval Golding and Roddy Radiation on guitars, Horace Panter on bass, John Bradbury on drums, and Dick Cuthell and Rico Rodriguez on horns. The band wore mod-style "1960s period rude boy outfits ". Their music combines the danceable rhythms of ska and rocksteady with the energy and attitude of punk. Lyrically, their work presented overt political and social commentary.

Ska punk is a fusion genre that mixes ska music and punk rock music together. Ska punk tends to feature brass instruments, especially horns such as trumpets, trombones and woodwind instruments like saxophones, making the genre distinct from other forms of punk rock. It is closely tied to third wave ska which reached its zenith in the mid-1990s.

Kooba Radio was an independent, non-profit, Internet-based radio station focused on alternative rock, playing unsigned bands and artists with independent record labels. Kooba is PRS registered and played to a listenership in over 20 countries.

Christian ska is a form of Christian alternative rock, and subgenre of ska and ska punk which is lyrically oriented toward contemporary Christian music. Though ska did not constitute a genre within the Christian music industry until after third wave ska had peaked in the general market, Christian ska continued to thrive independently into the early 2000s.

Ecuadorian rock encompasses a broad and diverse independent music scene. The genre involves different styles including hardcore punk, metalcore, gothic metal, heavy metal, alternative rock, punk, ska, blues, and grunge.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Misspent Youth (band)</span> English glam punk band

Misspent Youth were a glam punk band from Birmingham, England. Formed in 1975, they were heavily influenced by the rock bands, New York Dolls and The Stooges. They released the single "Betcha Wont Dance" backed with their anthem "Birmingham Boys" on ex-Black Sabbath manager Jim Simpson's record label Big Bear Records in 1979 and could "boast quite a following" in Birmingham.

<i>Punk Rocksteady</i> 2018 studio album by Mad Caddies

Punk Rocksteady is the seventh full-length studio album as well as the first cover album by California ska punk band Mad Caddies, which was released on June 15, 2018 by Fat Wreck Chords. It was released four years after their full-length Dirty Rice (2014). The album consists of twelve originally punk rock songs that were hand-picked by the band alongside Fat Wreck Chords owner and NOFX singer Fat Mike, who also produced the album, and transformed into their trademark reggae sound, while also using influences from other genres, like dancehall, rock music, ska, Americana and more. The entire album was made available for streaming a day before its release.
