The Dresden Sun is an upcoming American science fiction heist film written and directed by Michael Ryan. It is produced by Archetype Pictures, and stars Christina Ricci, Steven Ogg, Linus Roache, Samantha Win and Mena Suvari.
A brilliant, principled mercenary with a traumatic past works on an inside job to steal "the sphere", a valued asset from Peredor Corporation, but the heist goes wrong. Meanwhile, The C & Earth corporation is hoping to use a scientist's project to gain dominance. Whilst an analyst at the powerful investment firm Mutual One is caught between deadly corporate rivals, financial fraud, technological espionage, and ends up on the run from a psychopathic military contractor. As well as writing and directing, Michael Ryan also produced the film alongside Tyler Lockamy at Archetype Pictures. Ryan described the film as allegory, which has themes including "corporatocracy, interdimensional reality, grief, arrested development, and apostasy." [2]
Samantha Win was announced as playing Z in June 2021. [3] In November 2021, Christina Ricci and Steven Ogg were revealed to have been cast as Dr. Dresden and mercenary Crilenger, respectively. [4] In January 2022, Mena Suvari was added to the cast. [5] A month later, Linus Roache was confirmed as Malik, a psychopathic military contractor. [6]
Principal photography took place in Northern California from January 2022. [7] Gabriel Horn was a consulting producer. Sabrina Jurisich, Shasta and Tehama Counties Film Commissioner, was reported to have remarked that the eight-week shoot was the largest single production to have ever been in Shasta County. Filming locations included Redding, the Redding Civic Auditorium and Redding City Hall. [8]
Reportedly chosen in-part for its "scenic backdrops", Shasta County was said to have been chosen for 15 separate filming locations for the film. [9]
Global sales on the picture are being handled by VMI Worldwide. [10]
Linus William Roache is a British actor. He is known for playing Executive ADA Michael Cutter in the NBC dramas Law & Order (2008–2010) and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (2011–2012). More recently, Roache played Ecbert, King of Wessex in Vikings from 2014 to 2017.
Mena Alexandra Suvari is an American actress, producer, fashion designer and model. After beginning her career as a model and guest-starring on several television shows, she made her film debut in the 1997 black comedy drama Nowhere. The accolades she has received include a Screen Actors Guild award, along with a Primetime Emmy Award nomination.
Sonja Denise Plack, known professionally as Sonja Sohn, is an American actress, activist and filmmaker, best known for portraying Baltimore detective Kima Greggs in the HBO drama The Wire (2002–2008). She is also known for having starred in the independent film Slam, which she co-wrote, and appearing as Samantha Baker in the ABC series Body of Proof. Her role in The Wire led to her work as the leader of a Baltimore community initiative called ReWired for Change.
Emile Davenport Hirsch is an American actor. His portrayal of Chris McCandless in Into the Wild (2007) earned him widespread acclaim and multiple nominations. Samantha Win Tjhia, formerly known as Samantha Jo, is a Canadian American actress and former wushu taolu athlete. After her competitive career, she turned to acting and in 2012, she debuted as an actress in the role of Kitana in Mortal Kombat: Legacy, followed by her role as Car-Vex in 2013's Man of Steel. She has appeared in various projects since, including a leading role as Chambers in Zack Snyder's 2021 film, Army of the Dead. She will also be starring in Michael Ryan's The Dresden Sun.
Steven Ogg is a Canadian actor. Ogg is best known for playing Trevor Philips in the 2013 video game Grand Theft Auto V and Simon in The Walking Dead. He has also appeared in the Breaking Bad spin-off, Better Call Saul.
