The Hart and Lorne Terrific Hour is a Canadian television variety show that aired on CBC Television in 1970 and 1971. [1] It was part of Sunday At Nine, a CBC anthology that included documentaries, dramas (such as Corwin ), and "light entertainment", [2] both domestic and imported. [3] The show starred Hart Pomerantz and Lorne Michaels. [3] The show mixed comedy sketches with musical guests, in a format similar to Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In , the show that Michaels was working on before returning to Canada to star in his own show. The Canadian Conspiracy is a 1986 CBC Television mockumentary, directed by Robert Boyd and co-written by Boyd, Mark Achbar and Mike Short. The Red Skelton Show is an American television comedy/variety show that aired from 1951 to 1971. In the decade prior to hosting the show, Richard "Red" Skelton had a successful career as a radio and motion pictures star. Saturday Night Live (SNL) is a late-night sketch comedy and variety show created by Lorne Michaels. It premiered on the NBC Television Network on October 11, 1975, under the title NBC's Saturday Night. The show often satirizes contemporary American popular culture and politics. Saturday Night Live features a two-tiered cast: the repertory members, also known as the "Not Ready for Prime Time Players," and newer cast members, known as "Featured Players." Each week, the show features a host, often a well-known celebrity, who delivers an opening monologue and performs in sketches with the cast. A musical guest is also invited to perform several sets. Every so often a host or musical guest fills both roles. Throughout the years 1969 to 1973, the time slot included The Wayne And Shuster Hour (q.v.) and The Hart And Lorne Terrific Hour (1970-71), with Hart Pomerantz and Lorne Michaels, as well as the network's prestige drama series, Corwin (1970, q.v.), Quentin Durgens, M.P. (1971, q.v.), and The Manipulators (1971, q.v.). It also included such imports from the BBC as The Six Wives Of Henry VIII and Elizabeth R .
Michaels moved to Los Angeles in 1968 to work as a writer for Laugh-In and The Beautiful Phyllis Diller Show, but returned to Canada and CBC-TV to star in The Hart and Lorne Terrific Hour, which aired in the early-70s.
I got a call from the head of the CBC, asking what it would take to bring us back to do shows on television.... We were the stars of the bits and cast..., and there was, you know an ensemble and a musical guest. James Taylor was on one. Cat Stevens was on one...there was a real form then called variety and it was comedy variety and it had you know music and comedy, and we would perform in front of an audience but mostly it was built in the editing room in the way that Laugh-In was.
