The Jackson Code were an Australian rock, country and folk band, which formed in Perth in 1988. The original line-up was Kenny Davis Jr on accordion and keyboards; Jason Kain on guitar (ex-Wet Taxis, Chad's Tree), Mark Snarski on guitar and vocals (ex-Chad's Tree) and Kathy Wemyss on vocals and trumpet (ex-Wet Taxis, Chad's Tree). The group released four studio albums Del Musical Del Mismo Nombre (1989), Strange Cargo (1992), Draggin' the River (1993) and The Things You Need (1995) before disbanding in 1996.
The Jackson Code were formed in 1988 in Perth as a country, folk four-piece by Kenny Davis Jr on accordion and keyboards; Jason Kain on guitar (ex-Wet Taxis, Chad's Tree), Mark Snarski (a.k.a. Marek Snarski) [1] on guitar and vocals (Chad's Tree) and Kathy Wemyss on vocals and trumpet (ex-Wet Taxis, Chad's Tree) while Chad's Tree were about to disband. [2] [3] From September 1988 Snarski started writing non-Chad Tree material, which included tracks working with Kain and Wemyss, "Kerosene", "Joe's Flame", "Bringer of Light", "Strange Lullaby" and "Hotel Stationery". [2] [4] In 1991 Snarski described their early performances:
It actually started out one night when Mathew De La Hunty asked me if I'd support Tall Tales and True as a solo act; and I thought 'Ohh, no, what I'll do is rope in [Kain] and [Davis Jr].' and I rang [De La Hunty] back and said 'pay us a little more money and I'll do it as the Jackson Code.' It was actually [Kain], [Davis Jr] and myself who played the first night and we roped in [Wemyss] for the second night.

Snarski had relocated to Sydney and for the band's debut album, Del Musical Del Mismo Nombre, he used the previously written material and added Mark Dawson on drums, Amanda Pearson on vocals and percussion and Barry Turnbull on bass guitar. [2] [4] It was released in August 1989 on the Waterfront label to critical acclaim, [2] and was re-released on CD in 1993. [5] A major influence for Snarski was his trip to Spain, the album's title is Spanish for "From the Musical of the Same Name". The Jackson Code recorded the album in four days on a budget of $1000. [2] The lush romanticism of the songs had critics searching for superlatives. [2] Writing in Rolling Stone , reviewer Jon Casimir described it as one of the minor masterpieces of 1989. [2] According to Casimir they took inspiration for its "self-styled urban Romantic Cabaret" from German writers Brecht and Weill, as well as Tom Waits. [2] They promoted the album with national tours, playing shows in Sydney and Melbourne. Rather than capitalise on their acclaim however, Snarski took a hiatus: travelling for two years in Spain and USA. [2]
Snarski revived the Jackson Code in 1992 to record their second studio album, Strange Cargo. [2] Davis Jnr, Kain, Snarski and Wemyss were joined in the studio by Dawson, Pearson and Turnbull, together with string, brass and hand-clap sections. [1] [2] [6] Strange Cargo was released on Citadel Records in August 1992. [2] [6] It had been recorded and mixed within one week. [6] The Canberra Times ' Rebecca Lang praised Wemyss' "riveting" vocals on "Trap the Light" and "Lucifer's Polka" and Snarski's lyrics "dubbed 'aural film noir,'>" [6] Australian musicologist Ian McFarlane noticed Snarski's "melodramatic vignettes, detailing a range of emotions and shady characters. The music ranged from rock to pop to country to jazz to European folk." [2] At the ARIA Music Awards of 1993 it was nominated for Best Independent Release. [7]
The band signed to RooArt in 1993 and released one of that years' finest albums, Draggin' the River in December. [8] Music journalist Ed Nimmervoll reviewed it, "Snarski invented a dark, brooding, menacing world for his songs to live in, and each song was like a little snapshot or movie captured in that world." [9] At the ARIA Music Awards of 1994 it was also nominated for Best Independent Release. [7] The band's fourth and last studio album The Things You Need was released in September 1995. [2] [10] McFarlane described the latter two albums, "vivid splashes of literary colour amid a world of grunge and techno." [2] The group issued four non-charting singles during 1993 to 1995. [2]
After touring with American crime writer James Ellroy in 1996, Snarski left Australia for Europe eventually settling in Madrid.
'There was this one afternoon where I'd dropped everyone off and I was carting this amp up the stairs of - what's that theatre we played in St Kilda? I just put it down and decided, I've had enough of this.' [11]
The Jackson Code's drummer Mark Dawson played with the Blackeyed Susans (also worked with Ed Kuepper). Kenny Davis Jr and Kathy Wemyss also briefly played with the Blackeyed Susans. Wemyss later performed with Midnight Oil at the opening ceremony of the Sydney Olympics in 2000, later she formed her own band Wemo. Davis joined Decoder Ring. Barry Turnbull and Mandy Pearson formed another group Love Me. [12]
The Jackson Code's retrospective compilation double album, The Second Greatest Story Ever Told (September 1998) has one disc of tracks from the four studio albums and a second disc of rarities. [13] In 2003 Del Musical Del Mismo Nombre was re-issued on CD format by Citadel Records. In June 2006 Snarski in Belgium sang with a specially reformed the Triffids for "An Evening with the Triffids" – an exhibition and show in remembrance of their lead singer David McComb. [14] The Jackson Code's "Everybody's Got Something to Lose" was used in the Australian television series Heartbreak High Season 1, Episode 9 "Family Addition" in April 1994. Air Supply are a soft rock duo formed in Melbourne, Australia, in 1975, consisting of Englishman Graham Russell and Australian Russell Hitchcock (vocals). They had a succession of hits worldwide, including eight top-five hits on the US Billboard Hot 100, "Lost in Love" (1979), "All Out of Love", "Every Woman in the World", "The One That You Love", "Here I Am", "Sweet Dreams", "Even the Nights Are Better" and "Making Love Out of Nothing at All" (1983). In Australia, they had four top ten placements with "Love and Other Bruises" (1976), "All Out of Love", "Every Woman in the World" and "The One That You Love". Their highest charting studio album, The One That You Love (1981) reached number ten in both Australia and the US. The group, which relocated to Los Angeles in the late 1970s, has included many members, with Hitchcock and Russell at the core. The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) inducted Air Supply into their Hall of Fame on 1 December 2013, at the annual ARIA Awards.
Died Pretty, sometimes The Died Pretty, were an Australian alternative rock band founded by mainstays Ron Peno and Brett Myers in Sydney in 1983. Their music started from a base of early electric Bob Dylan with psychedelic influences, including The Velvet Underground and Television. They were managed by John Needham, who is the owner of Citadel Records, their main label.
Wendy Joan Matthews is a Canadian-born Australian singer-songwriter who has been a member of Models and Absent Friends and is a solo artist. She released Top 20 hit singles in the 1990s including "Token Angels", "Let's Kiss ", "The Day You Went Away" and "Friday's Child" with Top 20 albums, You've Always Got The Blues, Émigré, Lily, The Witness Tree and her compilation, Stepping Stones. She has won six Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Awards. According to rock music historian, Ian McFarlane she provides "extraordinary, crystal-clear vocals [...] a soulfulness that was the mark of a truly gifted singer".

Louis Rohan Tillett was an Australian rock music singer-songwriter, keyboardist and saxophonist. Tillett was the front man in Australian bands The Wet Taxis, Paris Green and The Aspersion Caste. He also worked as a backing musician with Catfish, Laughing Clowns, New Christs and Tex Perkins. As a solo artist, he issued seven albums, Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell (1987), A Cast of Aspersions (1990), Letters to a Dream (1992), Cry Against the Faith (1998), Learning to Die (2001), The Hanged Man (2005) and Soliloquy (2006). He often worked with Charlie Owen, releasing two albums, The Ugly Truth (1994) and Midnight Rain. The latter album won the Rolling Stone Critics Award for Best Album of 1996.
"Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" is a song recorded by Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and released as the first single from Nicks' debut solo album Bella Donna (1981). The track is the album's only song that was neither written nor co-written by Nicks. Written by Tom Petty and Mike Campbell as a Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers song, Jimmy Iovine, who was also working for Stevie Nicks at the time, arranged for her to sing on it. Petty sang with Nicks in the chorus and bridge, while his entire band played on the song with the exception of Ron Blair, who was replaced by bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn for the recording.
"Dirty Water" is a single by The Blackeyed Susans, released in July, 1994, from their 1993 album, All Souls Alive. The last four tracks are taken from the cassette album Hard Liquor, Soft Music by The Blackeyed Susans Trio.
Welcome Stranger is the debut studio album by The Blackeyed Susans. Released in August, 1992, the album is a compilation of their first three EPs – Some Births Are Worse Than Murders, Anchor Me and …Depends On What You Mean By Love – with the addition of three tracks recorded at the same time as the material released on those EPs.
Mouth to Mouth is the third studio album by The Blackeyed Susans, released in July, 1995.
Spin The Bottle is the fourth studio album by The Blackeyed Susans, released in July 1997 on Hi Gloss Records. Initial copies came with a karaoke disc containing instrumental versions of each song. The album was produced by Victor Van Vugt and featured ten new original songs and a cover of Billie Holiday's "You're My Thrill". Three singles were released from the album - "Smokin' Johnny Cash", "Spin the Wheel" and "Blue Skes, Blue Sea".
"Let's Live" is a single by The Blackeyed Susans, released in June 1995. It was the first single taken from the band's third studio album, Mouth to Mouth. It included several bonus tracks which were not available on the album, the most notable of which was a Suicide-styled re-working of the Bruce Springsteen track "State Trooper".
"Mary Mac" was the second single released by Australian rock band The Blackeyed Susans from their fourth studio album, Mouth To Mouth. It was released on the Hi Gloss Record label in October 1996, three months after the album's release. The song was recorded as part of the band's recording of Mouth to Mouth during the autumn of 1995 at the Fortissimo Sound Studios in Melbourne. The single proved to be the band’s most successful thus far and the song an essential part of The Blackeyed Susans' catalog. The B-sides were bonus tracks, comprising: a cover of The Go-Betweens song, "Dive for Your Memory"; a cover of Canadian country music artist Hank Snow's "Ninety Miles Per Hour"; and an original, "Someone Watching Over Me", which was recorded by Phil Kakulas on an 8-track in a spare room in Abbotsford 1992.
"Smokin' Johnny Cash" is a single by The Blackeyed Susans, released in May 1997. It was the first single lifted from the band's album, Spin the Bottle.
David Alexander John Steel is an Australian singer-songwriter, guitarist and producer. He is a former member of folk rock group, Weddings Parties Anything (1985–88) and pop band, The Whipper Snappers (1990–91). Steel has released eleven solo studio albums, including one as leader of Dave Steel and the Roadside Prophets and two albums with folk singer, Tiffany Eckhardt. He has been nominated for three ARIA Music Awards.
Chad's Tree are an Australian rock band, formed in Perth in 1983 with two brothers, Mark and Rob Snarski, as the driving force. The band's brittle, off-kilter sound evoked the sense of distance, desolation, harshness and loneliness of the Nullarbor Plain, much in the same fashion as fellow Perth outfit The Triffids.
Timothy Robert Rollinson in Bolton, England is an Australian jazz guitarist and composer who was a founder of the acid jazz group Directions in Groove (D.I.G.) as well as his own trio, quartets and studio project, The Modern Congress. His work for D.I.G. included winning two APRA Awards for song writing, 1994 'Best Jazz Composition' for "Favourite" and 1996 'Most Performed Jazz Work' for "Futures". As well as two ARIA Music Award nominations, 1994 'Breakthrough Artist – Single' for "Re-Invent Yourself" and 1995 'Breakthrough Artist – Album' for Deeper. He released two solo albums, Cause and Effect in 1997 and You Tunes in 2010.
Three Chain Road is the second studio album by Australian musical artist, Lee Kernaghan. It was released in August 1993 and peaked at number 35 in February 1994.
Strange Tourist is the debut studio album from The Drones and Tropical Fuck Storm frontman Gareth Liddiard. The album was recorded inside Blackburn Castle in New South Wales over the first half of 2010, and was produced with the help of Burke Reid. Its minimal, "austere" and "meandering" acoustic songs instrumentally consist entirely of Liddiard's guitar-playing, and are topped with his versatile and heavily-accented vocals. Exploring themes such as isolation, jealousy, guilt, colonialism, wartime collaborationism, radicalism and many others, its detailed, narrative-based lyrics have been characterized as "dark and grinding", and are set in various periods of time as well as locations.
