The Kinetiks were a Meteor Award-nominated Irish rock, pop and indie musical ensemble from Dublin. They were vocalist and guitarist Gaz Harding, guitarist Sean Brennan, bassist Jim McGuire, and drummer Paul Donohoe. On 11 July 2008, they performed their biggest show thus far at Oxegen 2008 where they appeared second on the Green Room stage following Dirty Epics and prior to The Saw Doctors. [1] [2] They have also performed at the inaugural annual surf festival Cois Fharraige on 8 September 2007, [3] Indie-pendence in August 2008 [4] [5] and Hard Working Class Heroes in September 2008. Formation

The band formed in 2007. They shared influences such as the Beach Boys, The Strokes, The Who and The Beatles. On first hearing the band's track "A Smile'd Crack Your Face" RTÉ 2fm's producer, Ian Wilson booked the Dubliners for a live session with the station. [8] "A Smile’d Crack Your Face", released on the band's debut EP High Horse Olympics in summer 2007 became a favourite of RTÉ 2fm DJs Dan Hegarty and Jenny Huston as well as Ray Foley on Today FM and drew the attention of producer Gareth Mannix, who had previous experience working with Director, Delorentos, Republic of Loose and Humanzi. With Mannix The Kinetiks recorded the singles "Shuffle Your Feet" and "Bite the Bullet", [9] described by The Irish Times as "Kin brilliant." [10] Their Aye Aye Aye Aye EP is due for release on 6 March, the E.P was recorded in Grouse Lodge Studios, Westmeath, Sun Studios Dublin and Suite Studios Dublin by Marc Carolan (Muse/The Cure) and Gareth Mannix (The Thrills/The Flaws) and an album is forthcoming.

Break Up

In August 2009 Gaz Harding published a blog on the band's Myspace stating that The Kinetiks were no more. "People wanting different things from their lives" was the only reason given in the blog for the band's break-up.

Notable performances

The Kinetiks appeared on The Once a Week Show on 6 October 2007. [11]

They have also sold out the music venue Whelan's of Wexford Street in Dublin, topped the Phantom airplay chart and have provided support for a range of bands including The Enemy in the Ambassador Theatre, Young Knives and Scouting for Girls. [12] The band have achieved considerable airplay on other radio stations such as RTÉ 2fm and Today FM. [13]

At Oxegen 2008, The Kinetiks followed Dirty Epics onto the Green Room stage. In an interview with the Irish Independent beforehand, the band said they relished the prospects of playing in front of their biggest audience to date. Vocalist Gaz Harding (23) said:

"We're not nervous, just looking forward to it. Obviously the tent is massive. We're going to go and do what we do and hope that everyone will be blown away and we can go out and have a great night afterwards." [14]

On 16 January 2009, The Kinetiks featured on Aidan Power's The Cafe , [15] performing "Lightbulb" the lead track from their "Aye Aye Aye Aye" EP. [16]

In July 2009, they supported the charity music site Music Box For Life.Com by donating some of their music. [17]

Meteor Music Awards

The Kinetiks received a nomination in the category "Hope for 2008" at the 2008 Meteor Awards [18] but lost to Ham Sandwich at the ceremony on 15 February 2008. [19]

Oxegen Music festival in Ireland

Oxegen was a music festival in Ireland, first held from 2004–2011 as a rock and pop festival and again in 2013 with dance and chart acts only. The event was regularly cited as Ireland's biggest music festival, and, by 2009, it was being cited as the greenest festival, being a 100% carbon neutral event in Ireland. Republic of Loose Irish funk rock band

Republic of Loose were an Irish funk rock band from Dublin. Formed in 2001, the band formerly consisted of lead vocalist Mick Pyro, bass guitarist and vocalist Benjamin Loose, keyboardist Deco, guitarists and vocalists Dave Pyro and Brez and drummer and percussionist Coz Noelen.

Director were an Irish art rock quartet from Malahide in County Dublin. The group consisted of Michael Moloney (vocals/guitars), Eoin Aherne (guitars), Shea Lawlor (drums) and Rowan Averill. The band's 2006 debut album We Thrive On Big Cities was a critical and commercial success in Ireland. A follow-up album, I'll Wait For Sound was released in 2009.

The Blizzards

The Blizzards are an Irish band from Mullingar in County Westmeath. They were formed by Niall Breslin in late 2004, and also feature Dec Murphy (drums), Justin Ryan, Anthony Doran, Louize Carroll (bass) and Aidan Lynch (keyboards). They have achieved multiple platinum record sales and have won numerous awards.

Jenny Huston is a Canadian presenter of radio and television in Ireland. She was disc jockey on RTÉ 2fm, an occasional presenter on RTÉ Radio 1 and a television presenter with channels operated by Raidió Teilifís Éireann.; Huston presents an indie rock and pop music show on Friday nights and a rock anthems show which is broadcast on Sunday nights. A highlight of her television career was co-hosting RTÉ's Electric Picnic coverage with Tom Dunne in 2006.

Delorentos Irish alternative rock band

Delorentos are a Dublin-based Irish alternative rock band, formed in 2005. They consist of Rónan Yourell, Kieran McGuinness, Níal Conlan and Ross McCormick. The band's debut album In Love with Detail was critically acclaimed in Ireland, being nominated for the Choice Music Prize and in the Best Irish Album category at the 2007 Meteor Awards, at which Delorentos were also nominated for Best New Irish Band. Two extended plays have also been released; their debut release, titled Leave It On, in October 2005, and the follow-up EP, titled Do You Realise, came out in November 2007. The Delorentos discography consists of a selection of singles which impacted on the Irish Singles Chart, such as "The Rules" in May 2006 and "Stop" in July 2007.

Cois Fharraige (festival)

Cois Fharraige was a three-day Irish surfing and music festival, first held in Kilkee, County Clare in 2007. The name is derived from the Irish language phrase meaning "beside the sea". It was notable as Ireland's first surfing and music festival and was a joint project between MCD and Sony Ericsson. The 2008 event was held from 5–7 September.

Oxegen 2008

Oxegen '08 was the fifth Oxegen festival to take place, following the dissolution of its predecessor Witnness in 2004. It took place on the weekend of Friday 11 July, Saturday 12 July and Sunday 13 July at Punchestown Racecourse near Naas in County Kildare, Ireland. For the first time the festival was a three-day event. The festival was headlined by Kings of Leon on the Friday, The Verve and R.E.M. on the Saturday and Rage Against the Machine on the Sunday.

Jape (band) Irish electronic–rock band

Jape are an Irish electronic–rock band from Dublin. Formed as a side project by Richie Egan whilst part of The Redneck Manifesto, they have released five albums to date; Cosmosphere (2003), The Monkeys in the Zoo Have More Fun Than Me (2004), Ritual (2008), Ocean of Frequency (2011), and This Chemical Sea (2015). Jape's wider discography includes the EP, Jape is Grape (2007), as well as a number of singles, including "Floating" and "Phil Lynott". Gareth Mannix is an Irish record producer. He has worked on platinum albums by Jerry Fish and the Mudbug Club, Damien Dempsey, Jack L and Juliet Turner. For six years consecutively a number of acts who have worked with Mannix have won Meteor Music Awards.

Dirty Epics were a four-piece Irish new wave band formed in Greystones, County Wicklow, but now resided in Dublin. They were composed of vocalist Sarah Jane (SJ) Wai, bassist Richie Power, guitarist Darren McCoy and drummer Alan Delaney and were managed by Nadine O'Flynn. They have performed at numerous festivals and television shows..

2008 Meteor Awards

The 2008 Meteor Music Awards ceremony was held in the RDS, Dublin, on Friday, 15 February 2008. Nineteen awards were presented. It was the eighth edition of the Republic of Ireland's national music awards. The event was later broadcast on RTÉ Two on Saturday, 16 February at 21:00. The comedian Dara Ó Briain hosted the awards for the first time since 2004 Duke Special and Cathy Davey won the Best Irish Male and Best Irish Female Awards respectively, whilst veteran rockers Aslan won the Best Irish Band Award and Paddy Casey's Addicted to Company won Best Irish Album. For the eighth consecutive year Westlife won the Best Irish Pop Act accolade. Ham Sandwich were presented with the Hope for 2008 Meteor Award by RTÉ 2fm DJ Rick O'Shea. The Blizzards won Best Irish Live Performance for their Main Stage appearance at Oxegen 2007, whilst Muse picked up the award for Best International Live Performance, which also occurred at Oxegen the previous year. The award for the Most Downloaded Song was given to Mundy and Sharon Shannon's chart hit "Galway Girl". The Saw Doctors were presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award and were also amongst the performers at the event.

The Chapters are a six-nine piece band from Dublin, Ireland. The band are composed of Ross McNally, Michael Murphy, Ciaran Fortune, NC Lawlor, Aoife Ruth and Biggles Flys Again. Additional string, brass and guest players join the band on occasion.
