The Light in the Hall (Welsh : Y Golau) is a bilingual Welsh and English-language drama television series. It premiered on S4C on 15 May 2022.

Production

The series was co-produced by S4C, Channel 4, and the producers Duchess Street Productions and Triongl in association with APC Studios. [1] The show is based in Carmarthenshire, Wales where two of the leading actors, Alexandra Roach and Iwan Rheon are from. Significant parts of the series were also filmed in the Tywi Valley, in the towns of Llandovery, Llangadog, Llandeilo and Carmarthen. Some filming also took place in Cardiff. [2]

Plot

The Welsh series has six episodes and is based in Llanemlyn, a town in west Wales. It follows a young journalist, Cat Donato who is played by Alexandra Roach, whose best friend Ela Roberts went missing 18 years ago. A quiet gardener named Joe Pritchard played by Iwan Rheon, is arrested following a confession but he cannot explain what happened to the body. [3]

Release and reception

The series was made in 2022 and premiered on S4C in Wales on 15 May 2022. This was followed by a UK-wide airing on Channel 4 in January 2023. [4]

Rotten Tomatoes ratings were 71% critics and 75% audience. [5]

In her review for The Guardian , Lucy Mangan stated that the series takes an hour to set the scene and is at its strongest during the interpersonal scenes, particularly the tender relationship between Sharon and Dai. Greta's refusal to join her mother's “Murderwang! Gang” is a memorable moment also. [6]

Caerdydd is a Welsh language television programme set in Cardiff made by Fiction Factory for Welsh public service television station S4C. First commissioned by S4C's drama editor Angharad Jones in 2005, as part of a drive by S4C to reach a younger audience, the third series of Caerdydd started its run on S4C on 30 March 2008. A fourth series was commissioned and went into production in Spring 2008. It started broadcasting on 14 June 2009.

Gwaith/Cartref is a Welsh language television series that in set in the comprehensive school of Bro Taf, broadcast on S4C. The show was set in the Welsh valley Rhondda Cynon Taf from series one until the end of series five, and Rhymney Valley from the beginning of series six until the end of the show in series nine. The first episode was broadcast on S4C on 18 September 2011 and the final episode on 12 April 2018. Gwaith/Cartref ran for 90 episodes and almost 7 years. In 2019, the first three series were made available on S4C Clic.

The Toll, released in the US with the title Tollbooth, is a 2021 Welsh black comedy film directed by Ryan Andrew Hooper and written by Matt Redd. The film stars Michael Smiley, Annes Elwy, Iwan Rheon and Paul Kaye. It premiered at the Official Selection of the 2021 Glasgow Film Festival.

Rough Cut is a Welsh language contemporary thriller series.

Wolf is a six-part British television miniseries, based on the Jack Caffery novels by Mo Hayder. It was made for BBC One and BBC Wales. Wolf began airing on BBC One, BBC Wales and BBC iPlayer on 31 July 2023.

Men Up is an upcoming BBC One and BBC iPlayer television film, about the first ever clinical trials for the drug viagra, which took place in Swansea in 1994. Russell T Davies is amongst the executive producers. The cast includes Aneurin Barnard, Alexandra Roach, Phaldut Sharma, Iwan Rheon, Steffan Rhodri and Joanna Page.
